The online CPD logbook service is now in operation to provide
solely for members of the HKIE to record their personal
CPD activities. Members are invited to enter the Members'
login area of our website to access to this online free-of-charge
CPD logbook for keeping a systemic record of their CPD participation.
For trainees who are under the formal training schemes
of the HKIE, they will remain to be required to record
their CPD activities in the Record of CPD with endorsement
by their Engineering Supervisors.

2.Guidance Notes for Mandatory Continuing Professional Development (CPD) for Corporate Members (Before 1 January 2017)
The mandatory CPD requirements for Corporate Members was implemented on 1 January 2006 and the Continuing Professional Development (CPD) Committee had prepared a set of "Guidance Notes for Mandatory CPD for Corporate Members" to explain the policy framework and implementation details of the scheme for the reference of Corporate Members.
The "Guidance Notes for Mandatory Continuing Professional Development (CPD) for Corporate Members (September 2014)" is to be phased out after 1 January 2017. It can be downloaded from here.
3.Mandatory Continuing Professional Development (CPD) Requirements for Corporate Members (Update) - 1 January 2017
The Institution has implemented the mandatory CPD requirements for Corporate Members since 1 January 2006. Auditing exercise in checking on individual's compliance is conducted annually since 2009.
Commencing 1 January 2019, competence-based approach to CPD activities will be fully implemented as part of CPD requirements for Corporate Members. Corporate Members are required to undertake, out of the 30 hours per year, at least 5 hours each for two areas of CPD activities, namely "Technical Matters" (TM) and "Broader Areas of Studies" (BAS). There will be a transitional period of two years from 1 January 2017 to 31 December 2018 during which members are encouraged to specify their number of hours of CPD activities for "Technical Matters" and "Broader Areas of Studies". However, these hours will not be taken into account for auditing and checking purpose during the transitional period.
Corporate Members are required to complete and return an annual CPD Declaration Form together with the membership subscription advice to the Institution. A random checking, usually 1% sampling, on all Corporate Members, will be conducted on an annual basis. Members who are selected for checking will be asked to submit their evidences of CPD.
The following actions shall be taken in case of non-compliance:
Corporate Members who fail to comply with the CPD requirement in the 1st year selected for sampling will be asked to submit their records again in the following year;
Warning letters will be issued to Corporate Members who fail to comply in two consecutive years. The HKIE Continuing Professional Development Committee (CPDC) will also follow up with those Corporate Members on the reasons of non-compliance;
Corporate Members who fail to comply with the CPD requirements in the 3rd consecutive year may be invited to an interview with HKIE Continuing Professional Development Committee (CPDC) Representative(s);
Corporate Members who fail to comply with the CPD requirements for the 4th consecutive year will have their names published in Hong Kong Engineer.

Continuing Professional Development (CPD) Requirements for
Associate Members and Applicants for Associate Members
In response to the development needs of Associate
Members, the Associate Members Committee was pleased to propose
to the Council through the Learned Society Board and the Qualification
and Membership Board in introducing new CPD requirements for Associate
Members and Applicants for Associate Members. These new requirements
shall be in line with the future requirements of the Engineering
Technologists’ Mobility Forum. These will also help in the
enrichment of professionalism of Associate Members.
The following CPD requirements were approved
by the Council at its meeting of 16 January 2003 for implementation
on 1 February 2004.
CPD Requirements for Associate Members (Voluntary
Associate Members are encouraged to undertake
a minimum of 5 CPD days (30 hours) each year on a self-regulatory
and voluntary basis starting 1 February 2004.
Associate Members are required to record their
CPD days in a log book and complete a Declaration Form, which will
be attached with the membership subscription advice. This is a self-assessment
and self-declaration exercise aimed at promoting CPD among Associate
CPD Requirements for Candidates who apply
to become Associate Members either through normal route or mature
A record of CPD should be submitted. The requirement
is a minimum average of 45 CPD hours (or 7.5 CPD days) per year
for the 2 years immediately prior to their applications for Assessment.
CPD should cover subjects with direct technical
relevance of the discipline applied for as well as those of a broader
professional nature. The minimum requirement for occupational safety
& health/environmental subjects and/or professionalism and ethics
should be 6 CPD hours per year.
In the first year of implementation, i.e. from
1 February 2004 to 31 January 2005, the CPD requirement should be
45 CPD hours (or 7.5 CPD days) for 1 year immediately prior to their
application for Assessment.
