Associated with the rapid development of Hong Kong, the water quality of our beautiful Victoria Harbour (Harbour) deteriorated seriously caused by the sewage discharged from some 3.5 million residents living on both sides of the Harbour.
The Drainage Services Department had commenced the HATS in 1994. The HATS is the world’s largest sewage conveyance/treatment system of its kind. It incorporates a chemically enhanced primary treatment plant with designed treatment capacity of 1.7 million m3/day on the Stonecutters Island. The sewage collected was conveyed via a 24km long up to 150m deep tunnel sewage conveyance system to the Stonecutters Island Sewage Treatment Plant for treatment before discharge.
The Harbour’s water quality has significantly revived after the implementation of the HATS Stage 1. The cross-harbour swimming race has resumed in 2011 after 33 years of interruption.
