Stonecutters Bridge is a notable member of the major bridges under the portfolio of the Highways Department. The main span of the bridge is 1,018m and is one of the longest span cable-stayed bridges in the world.
Stonecutters Bridge spans across the Rambler Channel and forms the centrepiece of Route 8 between Tsing Yi and Sha Tin. It is visible from the densely populated urban areas and forms a new landmark of Hong Kong.
Stonecutters Bridge is notable for a number of unique and innovative features. The bridge form was acquired through an international design competition and is in visual harmony with the landscape around the harbour. The streamlined split deck enhances stability under high wind. The bridge stands in a marine environment and is exposed to strong typhoon wind posing challenges in stability and durability. The ability to meet such challenges was a significant achievement for both designers and contractors.
