Opened in 1993, the over 800-metre Central-Mid-Levels Escalator and Walkway System in Hong Kong spans nine streets from Des Voeux Road to Conduit Road, with a rise of more than 135 metres. After 25 years of operations with daily passenger numbers much higher that the System was designed for, the Refurbishment of the System aims to uplift its quality and safety standards to meet increasing usage demand.
Anlev Elex Elevator Limited (Anlev Elex), a subsidiary of ATAL Engineering Group, was awarded the refurbishment contract to replace the entire escalator and walkway system in 12 phases, working down from Conduit Road, one section at a time, to minimise inconvenience brought to the public. The escalators and walkway are designed and manufactured by ATAL’s subsidiary company, Nanjing Anlev Elevator Limited. In addition, Anlev Elex will also provide maintenance service to the System.
The refurbished System will come with energy efficiency features such as energy saving motors, variable speed drives, service-on-demand functions and LED lights along the escalator for better illumination. The reliability and availability of the refurbished System will also be enhanced for greater convenience to users.
