The Shenzhen (SZ) River is the boundary river between the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) and Shenzhen. To alleviate the perennial flooding problem in Yuen Long and North District, SZ River, with a total length of 18 km from Pak Fu Shan to SZ Bay, has been upgraded under stages I, II, III and IV of the regulation of SZ River projects and completed in 1997, 2000, 2006 and 2017 respectively. SZ River was upgraded by the regulation works including deepening and widening to withstand a rainstorm with a return period of one in 50 years.

The works comprises
  1. regulation of about 18 kilometres long river channel of SZ River between Shenzhen Bay and Pak Fu Shan under Stages I - IV;
  2. improvement to Lok Ma Chau and Liu Pok river bends under Stage I;
  3. provision of border security facilities under Stage II;
  4. reconstruction of Lo Wu Railway Bridge under Stage III;
  5. construction of a flood retention lake with a capacity of about 80 000 cubic metres under Stage IV; and
  6. ecological conservation and environmental protection works, including landscaping, ecological riverbank protection, riverbank greening, maintaining natural river bed to minimize erosion and siltation downstream.
