The section of Route 8 between Cheung Sha Wan and Sha Tin is a 5.9 kilometres long dual three-lane carriageway. It will provide the fourth road link between Sha Tin and Kowloon, serving the increasing traffic demand between Northeast New Territories and West Kowloon. It will also help to relieve the traffic congestion in Lion Rock Tunnel, Tate's Cairn Tunnel and Tai Po Road.

This section of Route 8 consists of three main portions - namely the Lai Chi Kok Viaduct, the Eagle's Nest Tunnel, and the Sha Tin Heights Tunnel.

After commissioning, the traveling time from Sha Tin to Cheung Sha Wan will only take about 10 minutes.
