Ma On Shan Bypass is a 3.2 kilometres stretch of dual 2-lane carriageway at the outskirt of Ma On Shan New Town connecting Ma On Shan Road near Heng On Estate at its west end, and to Sai Sha Road in Cheung Muk Tau at its east end. With the commissioning of this new trunk road, traffic congestion in the district would be eased as drivers could travel direct and fast between the east and the west of Ma On Shan New Town via this bypass, without passing through the busy town centre. This new trunk road also served to open up the development potential in the eastern fringe area of Ma On Shan New Town such as Pak Shek and Sai Sha.
Extensive traffic noise mitigation measures have been installed along this bypass to reduce traffic noise nuisance to nearby residents. The installation of 63,000 square metres of noise barriers along the bypass is the largest ever in a single public works contract in Hong Kong.
The greening concept had been applied to the Road T7 Project. A total of about 18 hectares of landscaped area have been provided and more than 900,000 plants have been planted so as to further improve the environment of Ma On Shan District.
