Route 8 is a 28 kilometres trunk road linking North Lantau and Sha Tin. The Sha Tin Heights Tunnel forms part of the section of Route 8 between Cheung Sha Wan and Sha Tin, which will be fourth vehicular link between Sha Tin and Kowloon.
The Sha Tin Heights Tunnel is a dual 3-lane vehicular tunnel approximately 1 kilometres in length, linking the 5.6 hectares Toll Plaza at the valley of Sha Tin Heights and the Sha Tin Approaches in Tai Wai. It comprises twin parallel, horse-shoe shaped tubes, each with a finished internal dimension of 16 metres in width and 9 metres in height. Cross Passages linking the north and south bound tunnels have been constructed at approximately 100 metres intervals, for the evacuation of road users in an emergency situation. Portal buildings have been constructed at both entrances to the tunnel to house the controls for ventilation and traffic supervision services installed within the tunnel.
The Sha Tin Approaches consists of the main approach road linking to Road T3 and two single-lane slip road viaducts, each about 500 metres long, connecting to Che Kung Miu Road. About half the length of the main approach road will run within a noise enclosure, the top of which will also double as a landscaped deck with extensive planting to improve the visual aspects of the road.
