To facilitate transmission of natural gas to Lamma Extension from Guangdong Dapeng LNG Receiving Terminal located at Cheng Tou Jiao, Shenzhen for electricity generation, HEC has constructed a 92 kilometres Submarine Gas Pipeline. With a diameter of 20 inches, the steel pipeline is buried at 3 metres under the seabed and is protected by armour rock at strategic locations along the pipeline route. The pipeline is designed with a life of 50 years and has adequate capacity to supply extra gas to cope with future gas and electricity demand of Hong Kong.

Natural gas extracted from gas fields in Australia's North-West Shelf is liquefied and transported as liquefied natural gas (LNG) by ship to Guangdong LNG Terminal. At the terminal, the LNG is gasified and supplied to Lamma Island via the 92 kilometres submarine gas pipeline.
