The West Kowloon Cultural District (WKCD ) project is among 10 major infrastructure projects proposed by the Chief Executive in his 2007 Policy Address. It is an important strategic project that will support Hong Kong’s development as a creative economy and global metropolis. It is a major initiative to meet the long-term infrastructure needs of Hong Kong’s arts and cultural development.
The 40ha WKCD site is located at the southern tip of West Kowloon Reclamation Area, among which 23ha is planned as open space for people’s enjoyment. Aiming to design the district towards a zero carbon zone, opportunities of using renewable energy sources were explored, such as solar and wind power, and buildings were arranged to integrate waste and water recycling systems. Core arts and cultural facilities will include 15 performing arts venues, a cultural institution with museum functions and an exhibition centre. There will also be retail-dining-entertainment facilities and residential, hotel and office developments within WKCD.
Upon its completion, it can foster organic growth and development of cultural and creative industries, attract and nurture talents, promote international exchange and co-operation, enhance the quality of life for citizens and make Hong Kong the cultural gateway to Pearl River Delta.
