Aims

The Scholarship scheme aims

• to recognise the academic achievements of the outstanding full-time engineering undergraduate students;
• to identify potential engineering students and develop them into future engineers;
• to promote the HKIE to engineering students in local universities; and
• to encourage our future engineers to take active participation in the HKIE activities.

Awards

The Scholarship will be awarded to three engineering undergraduate students.  Each successful candidate will receive a certificate and a total grant of HK$80,000, which will be disbursed to the recipients in four instalments (i.e. HK$20,000 per annum) at the end of each academic year.  However, the subsequent instalments will only be disbursed to the awardee if he or she (a) is major in an engineering degree programme accredited by the HKIE and the academic results are either of i) 3.5 GPA* or above; or ii) the top 5% in the class; and (b) submits a video of 3-5 minutes to illustrate his or her involvement in the HKIE activities in the past year (please refer to “Presentation of Awards” for details).

* The requirement of 3.5 GPA is based on a GPA scale with a maximum of not less than 4.0 and not exceeding 4.3.

Eligibility

Candidate should:

• be a full-time second year undergraduate student who has declared a major in a HKIE-accredited engineering programme in any local university (incoming exchange students not included);
• obtain i) 3.5 GPA* or above; or ii) the top 5% in the class in the first year in the university;
• obtain Level 4 or above in English Language and Chinese Language (or a language other than English)**, and Level 5 or above in two subjects among Mathematics and Science Education (Biology; Chemistry; Physics; Science (Integrated, Combined)) in the Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education Examination (i.e. Mathematics + 1 Science Education subject or 2 Science Education subjects) or equivalent;
• be a Student Member of the HKIE or in the process of application for student membership;
• have strong leadership ability demonstrated in his/her extra-curricular activities and community service; and
• be recommended by the Dean of Engineering Faculty/School or the Head of Engineering Department of the University.

** The qualification in a language other than English as an equivalent to the requirement on Chinese Language will be subject to judgment of the Judging Panel of the HKIE Scholarship.

Application Procedures

• Universities offering engineering degree programmes accredited by the HKIE will be informed of the Scholarship scheme and be invited to make nominations for the Scholarship.
• Nominations should only be made by the Dean of Engineering Faculty/School or the Head of Engineering Department. Each University can nominate a maximum of four candidates.

Selection Procedures

• The Judging Panel consists of senior members of the HKIE.

• The awardees must demonstrate their enthusiasm in becoming an engineer in contributing to the general well-being of the community of Hong Kong.
• Candidates will be short-listed and invited for an interview tentatively scheduled for November 2024.  Candidates not invited for interview by December 2024 shall consider their applications unsuccessful.
• The HKIE reserves the right to reject or disqualify any application. The decision of the HKIE Judging Panel will be final. In the event of there being unable to find candidates of sufficient merit, they may withhold all or any of the awards at their absolute discretion.
• If, after an Award is bestowed, any fact supplied in the respective nomination is discovered to be fraudulent or untrue, or an Awardee is proven to be associated with a fraudulent or dishonourable act, the HKIE reserves the right, after consulting the Panel of Judges, to institute any actions deemed fit.

Announcement of the Results

The universities and the individual awardees will be notified of the results in December 2024/ January 2025.

Presentation of Awards

A certificate will be awarded to each successful candidate.  The scholarship will be disbursed to the awardees in four instalments.  The subsequent instalments will only be disbursed to the awardees if he or she (a) is major in an engineering degree programme accredited by the HKIE and the academic results are either of i) 3.5 GPA* or above; or ii) the top 5% in the class; and (b) submits a video^# of 3-5 minutes to illustrate his or her involvement in the HKIE activities in the past year.  The awardee shall make an oral presentation in the video, and the video shall be uploaded to the website of the respective Engineering Faculty/School/Department of the University for public access.

The respective Engineering Faculty/School/Department of the University shall also announce names and relevant information of their students who are awarded the HKIE Scholarship on their website for public access, including photos taken at the award presentation ceremony which will be provided by the HKIE.

^# Specifications for production of video:

1. Length of the video clip should be in the range of 3-5 minutes.
2. Contents should include awardee’s involvement in HKIE activities and be on some (if not all) points of the following: academic/non-academic activities/achievements in the past year with examples provided, particularly those related to HKIE, explanations on what have been learned in these activities, new reflections on the role of an engineer in a society and/or in the profession, the awardee's plan for next year, etc.
3. The video may contain the photos/video chips the awardee shot (or shot by other for the awardee) during the academic/non-academic activities, or slides (with voice over) which help the awardee to explain those contents in Point 2 above, the awardee interviewing/being interviewed by others, etc.
4. The format of the video clip should be one of those playable by Windows Media Player 12 or QuickTime Player 7 with resolution not less than 320*180 but not more than 1920*1080.
