
The HKIE 50th Anniversary Legacy Award

Join us as we commemorate the 50th anniversary of The Hong Kong Institution of Engineers (HKIE) with the HKIE 50th Anniversary Legacy Award. This distinguished award is designed to celebrate outstanding engineering projects, groundbreaking technologies, and transformative initiatives that have made a lasting impact on the engineering landscape, industry, and society of Hong Kong and across the globe over the past five decades. Comprising three major categories (Innovation, Industrial, and Infrastructure), the Legacy Award is now open for submission until 5:00pm (Hong Kong Time), 10 January 2025.

Objective
- Recognising and honouring exceptional engineering projects, technologies, and initiatives that have significantly contributed to the advancement of Hong Kong and the world
- Celebrating and showcasing innovative solutions that have made an enduring impact on society and industry
- Encouraging excellence in engineering practices and inspiring future generations of engineers to strive for innovation and excellence
- Promoting collaboration and knowledge-sharing within the engineering community by highlighting successful projects and initiatives
- Establishing a prestigious accolade that sets benchmarks in the field of engineering and serves as a symbol of excellence within the industry
Award Categories
1. Innovation Category
Innovative applications of inventions or theoretical concepts, whether originating from or implemented and enhanced/developed/adapted in Hong Kong or by engineering teams from Hong Kong. These innovations must demonstrate practicality and be supported by thorough analysis. For example, a pioneering concept backed by evidence of significant cost savings in construction.
2. Industrial Category
Consumer product for personal or commercial use, industrial equipment/machinery or process, and information and communications technology originating from or implemented and enhanced/developed/adapted in Hong Kong or by engineering teams from Hong Kong.
3. Infrastructure Category
A completed infrastructure project in Hong Kong focusing on transportation infrastructure and network; public utility and facility; healthcare; environmental and energy facility; new town planning and housing development; and commercial property development.
Eligibility
- All engineering projects completed, technologies introduced, and initiatives undertaken* in Hong Kong (and/or by engineering teams from Hong Kong [applicable to Innovation and Industrial Categories]) during the following periods:
- 1970s
- 1980s
- 1990s
- 2000s
- 2010s to present
- Entries must showcase pronounced engineering contributions
- Nomination should be submitted by an HKIE Corporate Member
- Nomination must be endorsed by key personnel associated with the entry
- An individual representing the entry’s key personnel, e.g. Project Director, Chief Engineer, Lead Researcher, a representative of the Research Team, Inventor, Consultant, or Contractor
- The Inventor; if unavailable, the leader of the Research Team associated with the entry
- The Endorser should be distinct from the Nominator
* There is no restriction on the place of origin/invention; however, nominations must substantiate the original/prototype’s enhancement/development/adaptation in the entry
Submission
Submission must consist of:
- A completed and duly signed Nomination Form
- Supporting material(s) is welcome, including but not limited to video(s), PowerPoint presentation(s) or research paper(s), which should be submitted together with the Nomination Form by email.
Selection Process
- Jury scoring (70%; refer to Judging Criteria)
- Public voting (30%)
Judging Criteria
- Technical sophistication (40%)
- The extent to which the entry’s conception, development, and implementation were advanced and pioneering within the context of the decade in which it originated
- The extent to which the ideas behind the entry are adaptable to other similar undertakings (for locally originated concepts) or the extent to which the prototype/theoretical concepts involved were successfully adapted to the local context in the entry (for concepts originating elsewhere)
- Positive impact and relevance (60%)
- The extent to which the entry has made or is predicted to make a positive, long-lasting difference to society, industry, and the engineering profession in Hong Kong and the world over an extended period. These impacts include but are not limited to the following areas:
- Social maintenance and progress (at the time of its introduction and present)
- Quality of life
- Sustainable development
- Precedent-setting in the industry
- Subsequent technical/technological developments
- Inspiration for the development of the engineering profession
- The extent to which the entry has been assimilated into and become indispensable to daily life and industry from the present perspective
- The extent to which the entry has made or is predicted to make a positive, long-lasting difference to society, industry, and the engineering profession in Hong Kong and the world over an extended period. These impacts include but are not limited to the following areas:

All nominations must reach the HKIE Secretariat by email to legacyaward@hkie.org.hk no later than 5:00 pm (Hong Kong time) on 10 January 2025. Late submission of Nomination Form and supporting materials will not be considered by the Panel of Judges.

Prizes
- Legacy Award, one for each Category (totally three Legacy Awards)
- Grand Award, one for each Category in every decade (totalling 15 Grand Awards)
- Certificate of Merit
Trophies and certificates will be presented to Legacy Award and Grand Award winners. Certificates of Merit will be awarded to entries deemed deserving of recognition by the Panel of Judges. The Panel of Judges reserves the right to withhold any or all of the awards at their absolute discretion.
Presentation of the Award will be made at the HKIE 50th Grand Annual Dinner tentatively in April 2025.
