The HKIE Outstanding Paper Award for
Young Engineers/Researchers 2020

This is the 15th consecutive year that the Institution organises this international competition, to encourage young engineers and researchers from worldwide aged 35 or below to publish their works and advance in their professional fields and promote the engineering advancement among the younger generation as a whole.

 

As the Editorial Panel of the HKIE Transactions, a quarterly periodical platform for discussing all aspects of engineering for both theoretical and practical perspectives, the HKIE Transactions Committee forms the Panel of Judges to oversee the organisation of the Award.

 

Eligibility

Sole or First author of a co-authored paper aged 35 or below, from local and overseas, on the closing date of submission. In the event of extension of submission deadline, the age requirement is to be considered according to the date of the original submission deadline (i.e. on 2 March 2020).

 

Judging Criteria

All submission will be judged according to the following criteria:

  1. Innovation and originality;
  2. Impact and significance of paper;
  3. Presentation including Paper Organisation, Methodology, Critical Analysis, Quality, Style, sources and Language

 

Selection Process

  • Each paper will be reviewed by two referees assigned by the judge of respective discipline of the Panel of Judges
  • Shortlisted papers will be further reviewed by the Panel of Judges and
  • The Panel of Judges will conclude the final result

Prizes

  • Up to three Awards will be given
  • Each prize comprises a plaque and certificate(s) and a cash prize of HK$5,000 for each awarded paper and will be presented in the Prize Presentation Ceremony to be held in September 2020 (final arrangement to be confirmed)
  • A Public Lecture will be held in Hong Kong for awardees to present their papers in Q4 2020 (tentative: September)
  • The awarded and shortlisted papers will be published in the HKIE Transactions (Special Issue) in December 2020
     

Submission

  • All submissions should be an original work and has not been published or is not under consideration for publication elsewhere
  • All entries to the Award would also be treated as submissions to HKIE Transactions
  • Each entry should be submitted via the HKIE Transactions ScholarOne Manuscripts site at:
    http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/thie
    New users should first create an account and make submission via the Author Centre.
  • The style and format requirements of papers for HKIE Transactions should be conformed.

  • Each entry should include the submission in electronic format and a completed Application Form

July 2020 Subject to referees' comments, authors may need to revise their papers for reviewing process
August 2020 Announcement of result
  • The list of awarded paper will be announced through the HKIE website
    Individual notification will be provided to each awardee
  • All awardees (i.e. the first author) will be invited to attend the prize presentation ceremony
  • Arrangement will be made to all invited awardees for the Public Lecture which will be held in Hong Kong
  • Additional information including the CV, biography and photo of author, has to be submitted for publishing in HKIE Transactions (Special Issue)

Remarks

  1. Both HKIE members and non-HKIE members are welcome to submit papers to the Award.
  2. The applicant who completes, submits and signs the application form will be acknowledged as the first author of the submitted paper.
  3. Only the first author (i.e. the awardee) of the awarded paper will be invited to receive the prize at the Prize Presentation Ceremony and the Public Lecture which will be held in Hong Kong; and each author (including the first author and co-authors) will receive a certificate for each awarded paper.
  4. The Panel of Judges of the Award reserves all the right on the final decision including not to make any Award.
  5. The Panel’s decision is final and no correspondence will be entered into. Awardees outside Hong Kong will be reimbursed for the cost of an economy airfare to attend the Prize Presentation Ceremony and the Public Lecture in Hong Kong. Subject to the Institution’s approval, accommodation for the awardees in Hong Kong will be arranged as and when appropriate.
