The HKIE Grand Award 2024 (Submission Closed)

The HKIE Grand Award, now in its second edition, is an award scheme that aims to champion the diverse contributions that the engineering profession has made to the development of Hong Kong. Comprising three major categories (Innovation, Industrial, Infrastructure), the HKIE Grand Award 2024 is now open for submission until 5:00pm (Hong Kong Time), 13 November 2023*.

Objective

  • To promote the importance of the engineering profession and recognise its contributions to the development of Hong Kong
  • To encourage HKIE members to develop their creativity and integrate it in their innovative application of engineering knowledge
  • To further inspire HKIE members' intellectual and career interests in engineering
  • To offer a platform for the sharing of engineering excellence and innovative engineering approaches

Group (Applicable to Innovation Category only)

  • All Member Group
  • Young Member Group (ALL group members must be of age 35 or below at the closing submission deadline of the competition)

 

Scope

Category Scope
Innovation 
  • The entry should focus on one or more of the 22 Engineering Disciplines of the HKIE as set out in the Application Form below. There are two sub-categories, namely (i) Sub-category I – An Invention and (ii) Sub-category II – An Innovative Application of Engineering Theories. Details of each are set out below:
  • Sub-category I - An Invention
    • A new and original engineering invention created by an individual or a team. Credits will be given to the practicability and applicability to real life situation of the entry, which should be in workable order and demonstrated as such. The entry can be a concept or technology intended to be applied to a future project or process.
  • Sub-category II - An Innovative Application
    • An innovative application focusing on the advancement of theory or practice of engineering, for example by applying several existing technologies in a novel way. The entry should be well supported by detailed analysis justifying the feasibility of the innovation; for instance, an innovative design to tackle current engineering problems in an advisory project or an innovative proposal with the aim to save construction cost. The engineering problems should be clearly defined, and the engineering theories applied should be well explained.
Industrial 
  • Each entry should be wholly or partly designed in Hong Kong and must focus on one of the following subject areas:
    • Consumer related product designed for personal or commercial use created by a company, an individual or a team.
    • Industrial equipment/machinery or process created by a company, an individual or a team.
    • Information and communications technology designed by a company, an individual or a team.
Infrastructure 
  • The entry should be a completed infrastructure project in Hong Kong, preferably completed1 within the past 3 years, focusing on one of the below aspects:
    • Transportation infrastructure and network

    • Public utility and facility

    • Healthcare

    • Environmental and energy facility

    • New town planning and housing development

    • Commercial property development

 1 Completion refers to the issuance of the substantial completion or maintenance certificate by the Engineer or similar for the infrastructure project.

 

Eligibility

Innovation 
  • Contestant(s) should either enter the competition in his/her individual capacity or in a team consisting of no more than FOUR members.

  • All contestant(s) should be a current member of the HKIE (of any class) upon submission of their application, whether the contestant(s) apply as an individual or as part of a team.

  • For each sub-category, each contestant/team can submit at most TWO entries. Such submissions may be made by the same team members. Extra entries should be submitted to other categories if applicable.

  • All designs must be nominated by a Corporate Member of the HKIE or a public/private organisation. Each nominator or nominating organisation shall nominate no more than two entries for each (sub-)category. Self-nomination will not be accepted.

  • Two entries that share any number of team members may still be submitted to the same (sub-)category, each to a (sub-)category different from the other’s, or both to more than one (sub-)category. An entry submitted to this (sub-)category cannot, in its entirety, be submitted to another category without change. Where a megaproject with diverse ideas or technologies is involved, the concerned party may consider submitting one part of it to this (sub-)category and another part to another.

  • Contestant(s) of age above 35 at the closing submission deadline of the competition is eligible for participation in the Innovation Category (All Member Group), and of age 35 or below is eligible for Innovation Category (Young Member Group). A team consisting of any one member of age above 35 should submit their entry to the Innovation Category (All Member Group). In the event of extension of submission deadline, the age requirement is to be considered according to the date of the original submission deadline.

  • Only applic­­ants can attend the interview if their submitted project is shortlisted.

Industrial 
  • Contestant(s) should be either the project owner, the consultant or the contractor of the proposed project on the condition that prior written permission is granted by the project owner. Contestant(s) should either enter the competition as a company, in his/her individual capacity, or in a team consisting of no more than FOUR members.

  • All contestant(s) should be a current member of the HKIE of any class upon submission of their application, whether the contestant(s) apply as an individual, as a company, or as part of a team.

  • For this category, each contestant/team can submit at most TWO entries. Such submissions may be made by the same team members. Extra entries should be submitted to other categories if applicable.

  • All entry must be nominated by a Corporate Member of the HKIE or a public/private organisation. Each nominator or nominating organisation shall nominate no more than two entries for each category. Self-nomination will not be accepted.

  • Two entries that share any number of team members may still be submitted to the same category, each to a category different from the other’s, or both to more than one category. An entry submitted to this category cannot, in its entirety, be submitted to another category without change. Where a megaproject with diverse ideas or technologies is involved, the concerned party may consider submitting one part of it to this category and another part to another.

  • The entry should currently be in production, and have not been on the market for more than 2 years.

  • Proof of concept or prototypes are not eligible for the award. Uncompleted projects at the design and construction stage are not eligible. If applicable, a substantial completion certificate should have been issued for the entry by the time of the submission. A maintenance certificate and suchlike are not required.

  • The entrant entity must have the sole manufacturing and/or trading rights of the entry and possess a valid Hong Kong business registration certificate.

  • Only applicants can attend the interview if their submitted project is shortlisted.

Infrastructure 
  • Contestant(s)should be either the project owner, the consultant or the contractor of the proposed project on the condition that prior written permission is granted by the project owner. Contestant(s) should either enter the competition in his/her individual capacity or in a team consisting of no more than FOUR members.

  • All contestant(s) should be a current member of the HKIE of any class upon submission of their application, whether the contestant(s) apply as the project owner, the consultant, or the contractor of the proposed project.

  • For this category, each contestant/team can submit at most two entries. Extra entries should be submitted to other categories if applicable. Extra entries should be submitted to other categories.

  • Contributions to the sustainable development of the society

  • Positive impact on the engineering profession

  

Submission

Submission must consist of:

  • A completed and duly signed Application Form

  • Supporting material(s) is welcome, including but not limited to video(s), PowerPoint presentation(s) or research paper(s), which should be submitted together with the Application Form by email.

 

Deadline

All submissions must reach the HKIE Secretariat by email to grandaward@hkie.org.hk no later than 5:00 pm (Hong Kong time) on 13 November 2023 (Monday)*. Late submission of Application Form and supporting materials will not be considered by the Panel of Judges.

Prizes

For the Innovation Category, one Grand Prize will be awarded to each group in each sub-category. One Grand Prize will be awarded to each of the other two Categories. Each such winning individual or team will receive a sum of HK$15,000. Any request for further conversion or transfer of the cash prize will not be accommodated.

 

A trophy and certificate will also be presented to Grand Prize winning individual or team. Merit Award winner(s) will be presented with certificate. There is no limit on how many Merit Award(s) could be conferred in each category. The Panel of Judges reserves the right to withhold any or all of the awards at their absolute discretion.

 

Presentation of the Award will be made at the HKIE Annual Dinner tentatively in March 2024.
