The Enginpreneurs Award 2021
The Enginpreneurs Award 2021

(Hong Kong, 22 June 2021) Under the Session theme “Believing is Seeing – Innovation for Transformation”, The Hong Kong Institution of Engineers’ key focus this year is to advocate and promote innovation and technology. With an aim to engage different sectors and different age groups and offer them opportunities to understand the importance of I&T and engineering in the sustainable development of the city, “The HKIE Innovation Expo” was held on 12 and 13 June 2021, along the theme “Engineering into Future”. A series of I&T activities for members, tertiary students as well as secondary and primary students were organised.
The Enginpreneurs Award 2021
“The Enginpreneurs Award 2021” was one of the highlights of the Expo. It combines the concepts of “Engineer” and “Entrepreneur” with an objective to encourage engineering practitioners aspiring to participating in I&T to utilise their expertise and embark on entrepreneurship. The competition was divided into two groups for both HKIE members and tertiary students respectively.
The final round of “The HKIE Enginpreneurs Award 2021” (for HKIE members) was successfully held in the afternoon of 13 June 2021. The Panel of Judges were formed by Co-Chairmen the Chief Executive Officer of Hong Kong Cyberport Management Company Limited (Cyberport) Mr Peter Yan and the President of the HKIE Ir Prof P L Yuen, with the Chairman of the Organising Committee of the “HKIE Innovation Expo” Ir Prof Adam S C Choy and the title sponsor of “The HKIE Enginpreneurs Award 2021” Ir Alex L Y Wong of the K H Foundations Ltd as Panel Members.
Shortlisted teams were to present their innovative projects to the Judges within one minute in an “elevator pitch” held at the Expo. Award winners were announced during the Closing cum Prize Presentation Ceremony on the same day.
Champion of the Competition went to Ir Lee Ka Kin and Mr Aldrin Or Chun Yin with the project “C-POLAR Bioelectret”. The innovative development of C-POLAR bioelectret can effectively arrest, inactivate and eliminate 99.9% of viruses and bacteria from fast air flow, with short contact time and low pressure drop which will better improve public health.
HKIE President Ir Prof P L Yuen, said after the competition that the projects submitted by the participants had very high quality, which gave him complete confidence in Hong Kong’s innovation and technology development. President Yuen hopes that the Institution can serve as a bridge between the awardees of the competition and relevant I&T institutions, and help the awardees to realise their innovative ideas.
Mr Peter Yan, Chief Executive Officer of Cyberport, said the competition’s goals closely align with Cyberport’s commitment to nurturing a vibrant I&T ecosystem through cultivating talents and promoting entrepreneurship. He further expressed his enthusiasm for potential partnership opportunities with HKIE to discover more winning technology applications among its members.
In addition, 13 incubator centres from the GBA signed Memoranda of Understanding with the HKIE in a signing ceremony at the Expo, to establish long-term I&T cooperation, promote the development of the local I&T ecosystem, and foster closer regional cooperation with the Mainland. The HKIE and the Cyberport also plan for future collaborations to support the I&T development in Hong Kong by providing suitable and relevant supports in different aspects to those pursuing I&T development.
The HKIE Innovation Award
“The HKIE Innovation Award” is an annual award the HKIE set up to encourage creativity and innovation in engineering among HKIE members, and to recognise innovative ideas and applications that would benefit the engineering industry and the world we live in. The Award succeeds and evolves from the former “The HKIE Innovation Awards for Young Members”. Since 2020, the HKIE expanded the scale of the Award and transformed it into “The HKIE Innovation Award” and “The HKIE Innovation Award (Young Member Group)” with the former open to members of all ages, and the latter for members of age 35 or below. There are two categories under each group, namely Category I – An Invention, and Category II – An Innovative Application of Engineering Theories.
