The Hong Kong Institution of Engineers Concerned about the Recent Fatal Accidents Occurred in Manholes

(Hong Kong, 23 December 2021) The Hong Kong Institution of Engineers (HKIE) is deeply concerned about the successive fatal accidents occurred recently due to working in manholes that took away lives of several workers from their loved ones. The HKIE offers its deepest condolences to the workers’ family.

The HKIE urges the Authority to undertake immediate investigations to allay public concerns about the work safety in manholes, introduce corresponding improvement measures to prevent future accidents and protect the lives of workers who devotedly contribute to Hong Kong’s development.

Industries should be mindful of providing a safe working environment to ensure safety at their construction sites. The Authority is also recommended to regularly review regulations related to site safety, and work hand in hand with industry stakeholders to strengthen the safety culture at construction sites, particularly those involving working in manholes or other underground structure and facilities, by a multi-pronged approach and partnership.

The Institution will work with the Authority as required and offer its expertise and experience in reviewing the accidents and recommend improvement for future practice to ensure work safety in similar environment.
