CPD Requirements

The HKIE specifies a minimum CPD requirement including minimum number of hours in different categories for those at the (a) pre-Corporate Member stage, (b) pre-Associate Member stage, (c) Associate Member stage on a voluntary and self-regulating basis, and (d) Corporate stage on a mandatory basis.  A candidate’s CPD record will be taken into account when considering his/her application for different classes of Membership as appropriate. CPD Requirements for Corporate Members (including Fellows)

Corporate Members (Including Fellows)

A minimum of 30 hours* of CPD per year, including at least 5 hours under “Discipline-Specific Technical Matters” (DSTM) and 5 hours under “Broader Areas of Studies” (BAS) or “General Professional Matters” (GPM), and 3 hours related to Health and Safety (H&S), which must include occupational safety and health.

 

Note: An annual sampling is conducted on 1% of all Corporate Members on their compliance to CPD requirements.

CPD Requirements for Associate Members

Associate Members

A minimum of 30 hours per year on a self-regulatory and voluntary basis.

 

CPD Requirements for Candidates applying to become Corporate Members

 

Routes CPD Requirement
Formal Training Route
(Applicable for Scheme “A” Trainees)
A minimum average of 45 hours per year from the commencement date of Scheme “A”, up to applying for Professional Assessment.

 

Discipline-Specific Technical Matters (DSTM)
A relatively higher percentage of CPD hours should be in this category, while fulfilling the following minimum requirements in other categories.

 

Health & Safety (H&S) including Occupational Safety and Health
Minimum 18 hours.

 

Other Technical Matters (OTM)
Minimum 18 hours.

 

General Professional Matters (GPM)
Minimum 18 hours.

 

In-house CPD activities should account for a maximum of 50% of CPD hours claimed.

General Experience Route A minimum average of 45 hours per year for the 6 years immediately prior to their application for Professional Assessment.
Mature Route A minimum average of 45 hours per year for the 3 years immediately prior to their application for Professional Assessment.

 

CPD Requirements for Candidates applying to become Associate Members

 

Routes CPD Requirement
Formal Training Route A minimum average of 45 hours per year from the commencement date of the training scheme, up to applying for Assessment.

 

CPD hours must include the following areas:

(i) Discipline-Specific Technical Matters (DSTM)

 

A relatively higher percentage of CPD hours should be in this category, while fulfilling the following minimum requirements in other categories.

 

(ii) Health & Safety (H&S) including Occupational Safety and Health, Other Technical Matters (OTM) and General Professional Matters (GPM)

 

Minimum 6 hours total each year.

In-house CPD activities should account for a maximum of 50% of CPD hours claimed.

General Experience Route or Mature Route A minimum average of 45 hours per year for the 2 years immediately prior to their applications for Assessment.
