Category I - An Invention

Bladeless is More – ANew Fan Design for Semi-outdoor Environment by Miss Hannah H N WONG and Mr Tony J TANG

To improve occupants’ thermal comfort in a semi-outdoor environment, mechanical ventilation is commonly adopted to induce air flow. However, most mechanical fans on the market are not effective in serving a large area and architects are often reluctant to use them for aesthetic reasons.

The Air Induction Unit (AIU) is an invention that blends aesthetics and functionality for ventilation in a semi-outdoor space. A bladeless fan with a minimalist design, the AIU utilises aerodynamic principles to induce a continuous, large-volume air flow with a gentle wind speed to improve human comfort. It ventilates a larger serving area than conventional industrial fans and is more energy-efficient and much quieter during operation. With no blades or other detachable parts, it is safe as well as easy to clean and maintain. Its simple design also makes it suitable for many applications. A patent for the AIU design has already been filed.

The AIU has been installed at The Green Atrium, a multi-purpose community centre at New World Development Company Limited’s Park Signature in Yuen Long to ventilate a semi-outdoor restaurant area. The venue is due to open in April 2015.

Miss Hannah Wong received her BEng in product analysis and engineering design from the Hong Kong Polytechnic University while Mr Tony Tang received his MEng degree from the University of Cambridge in 2011. They currently work in the Building Sustainability Group of Arup, focusing on sustainable building design.

This year, Certificates of Merit of Category I were presented to Miss Kany S Zhou and Dr Lee Hai Xiang while Certificate of Merit of Category II was presented to Mr Kyle F C Mak.
