(27 August 2015, Hong Kong) President Ir Chan Chi-chiu is pleased to announce the new initiatives of the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers (HKIE) in enhancing the visibility of the engineering profession at the media luncheon today. Ir Chan emphasised in the welcoming remarks, “‘Celebrating 40 Years of Success, Your Dreams Our Goals’ will be the theme for the Institution for the year ahead. 2015 is a special year for the Institution as it marks the 40th anniversary of HKIE’s establishment by ordinance in 1975. Under the context of constant change and increasing challenges, the HKIE has grown into a professional institution with a membership of over 32,000. Thanks to the strong foundation laid by our leaders over the years, the HKIE is well-prepared to build an even brighter future.” Ir Chan remarked the Institution will launch a series of events to celebrate its 40th anniversary, including the 40th Anniversary Cocktail Reception where outstanding members will be inducted into the HKIE Hall of Fame 2015 to recognise their contribution to the community. A 40th Anniversary Album on the engineering projects will also be published to highlight the contributions of the engineering profession and the Institution to Hong Kong’s development over the past 40 years. To foster a spirit of solidarity in the engineering family, the HKIE 40th Anniversary Sports and Family Fun Day will be organised in January 2016 for members and their families. As this year also marks the 20th anniversary of the HKIE’s admission to the Washington Accord, an international agreement among bodies responsible for accrediting engineering degree programmes which recognises the substantial equivalency of their accredited programmes and facilitates the mobility of professional engineers, the one-day Symposium on Accreditation of Engineering Programmes will be held to discuss the past and future accreditation development. In addition, drawing competition and micro film competition will be organised to arouse the interest of young generation in the engineering profession. This year, the HKIE President’s Protégé Scheme (PPS) is continued as part of the HKIE’s commitment to nourish young engineers. These young engineers will shadow the President to attend significant events to gain experiences. Ir Chan highlighted, “Through all these activities, the Institution can nurture these enthusiastic young engineers and in return, they will contribute for the benefit and advancement of the society.” Ir Chan indicated that to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the Institution, an anniversary logo is introduced to signify members’ continuous commitment and services to the community. In his presidential year, Ir Chan will join hands with the fellow members and the media to build a better future for the industry.
