(Hong Kong, 28 March 2015) The “Engineering and You” Programme organised by the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers (HKIE) was launched today at the Hong Kong Science Museum. Building on HKIE's theme for the Session, "Inspire the Young", the Programme’s key event is an engaging and interactive Exhibition of the distinguished achievements of engineers in Hong Kong. The Exhibition also includes winning entries of the HKIE Mobile Game Apps Competition 2015 and the "Engineering and You" Photo Competition 2015. Project Site Visits and lectures that are open to the general public have also been arranged. These activities will help the younger generation understand the important role engineering plays in our daily lives and show how engineers apply innovative technology to enhance our quality of life. By inspiring the young and sparking their interest in engineering, the HKIE hopes to nourish a new generation of talents for the profession.

The Opening Ceremony was officiated by Mr CHAN Mo Po Paul, MH, JP, Secretary for Development; Ir CHEUNG Chi Kong Victor, President of the HKIE; Ms SIT Man Karen, Museum Director of The Hong Kong Science Museum; and Ir CHAN Kwok Cheung Thomas, Vice President of the HKIE cum Chairman of the Organising Committee for the “Engineering and You” Programme. At the ceremony, the officiating guests placed designed pieces representing the diverse disciplines of the engineering profession in a diorama of Hong Kong, lighting up the miniature cityscape to kick off the “Engineering and You” Programme. The action symbolised how the relative contributions and concerted efforts of every sector of the engineering industry have shaped the development of the city.

Ir CHEUNG Chi Kong Victor, President of the HKIE, said, “The HKIE currently has approximately 32,000 members covering 21 engineering disciplines. Our vision is ‘Sustained Excellence in the Engineering Profession’. The HKIE has long been committed to promoting the engineering profession among young people, and ‘Inspire the Young’ has been adopted as the theme for this Session. To support the sustainable development of Hong Kong, we must nurture more young engineers who are enthusiastic and passionate about their work. Organised by the HKIE, the ‘Engineering and You’ Programme is thoughtfully designed to meet the aspirations and preferences of the next generation. It provides an excellent opportunity for young people to learn more about the diverse disciplines of the engineering profession. By showcasing the dynamic and meaningful aspects of engineering work, we hope to engage and attract the younger generation to join the profession in building a better future for Hong Kong.”

Details of the “Engineering and You” Programme:

“Engineering and You” – Exhibition
(1) Multi-media Zone and Interactive Games
The Multi-media Zone showcases several of Hong Kong’s large-scale infrastructure projects, landmark developments and historical buildings in a lively and innovative way. It aims to enhance public awareness of the critical role engineers play in the social and economic development of Hong Kong and demonstrate how they improve the quality of life in our community. Participants can also enjoy a number of interactive games, such as “Eco-Hero Challenge” which promotes green living; “Energy Quest: Race for the Future” where they can experience the fun of energy-efficient driving; and “Fantasy Pod: Engineering & You” which provides participants with the opportunity to be photographed alongside Hong Kong’s award-winning engineering project.

(2) The HKIE Mobile Game Apps Competition 2015
Mobile devices such as smartphones are an integral part of our daily lives. The Competition called on people interested in the design of mobile game applications (apps) and engineering technology to unleash their creativity and potential in integrating technology and engineering. Featured as part of the Exhibition, the winning mobile game apps will support the sharing of engineering design knowledge among the public in an interesting, interactive and novel way to achieve the goal of promoting the engineering profession in Hong Kong.

• Champion of Secondary Schools Category: “Gravity Trip” developed by Mr WONG Kin Fai of Chan Sui Ki (La Salle) College;
• Champion of Tertiary Institutions Category: “Super Delivery Worker” developed by Mr CHENG Yiu Kwan Franck, Mr LEUNG Chun Kit, Miss LUI Yung Yung and Miss CHEUNG Ngai Ching of Hong Kong Institute of Vocational Education (Sha Tin);
• Champion of Open Category: “Structure War” developed by Mr LI Lap Bong Eric and Mr Juan Marvin WIRJOMARTONO.

(3) "Engineering and You" Photo Competition 2015
The winning photos, which capture interesting aspects of engineering projects, will also be exhibited to help the public gain an appreciation of Hong Kong’s distinctive engineering achievements and experience the wonder of the engineering world. The Competition was organised to raise awareness of the contributions of engineers in different disciplines who dedicate their expertise and efforts to enhancing the quality of life in Hong Kong and driving the continuous development of our city.

• Champion of Public Category: “Engineering Through the Ages” by Ms YUEN Mei Ha.

In addition, the HKIE's first song, “Tian Gong”, in Chinese “天工”, was launched in 2014. The title of the song is taken from the Chinese proverb “巧奪天工”, meaning “a superb engineering masterpiece that excels nature”. The song was composed and written by two renowned musicians, Mr Anthony LUN and Mr CHENG Kok-kong. It signifies the devotion and commitment engineers have brought to advancing the development of Hong Kong. A competition was later held by the HKIE, where members were invited to translate the song into English. At today’s opening ceremony, Ir Ernest TAI was presented with a cash prize for his winning entry, “Pursuit of Excellence”.
