Chairman's Message

It is my great honour and privilege to take up the role of Chairman of the HKIE Electrical Division for Session 2026/2027. I have served the Division since 2017 and have been inspired by the dedication of past Chairmen and committee members over the last decade. I would also like to express my heartfelt gratitude to the immediate Past Chairman, Ir Leung Chi Tim, for his stewardship, and to all committee members for their dedication over the past year. Their efforts have built a solid foundation for us to move forward with confidence.
Looking ahead, my vision for the coming year is simple and clear: “Honouring our pass to unlock the future; empowering young engineers to shape our success — 傳承創未來,賦能鑄輝煌”

This vision echoes the Institution’s wider direction of “Connect Minds, and Empower Tomorrow” 匯聚智慧、創建明天by strengthening collaboration across disciplines, generations, sectors, and borders, and by empowering our members to contribute meaningfully to the future of engineering.

As we look ahead, we must seize the opportunities created by rapid technological advancement while carrying forward the strengths and values built over the years. Over the past decade, digitalisation and artificial intelligence, together with the development of large-scale data centres, renewable energy, drone applications, new battery technologies for electric vehicles, and high-speed rail, have transformed both our industry and society. By embracing these innovations, we can open new pathways, innovate continuously, and maintain our leadership within the engineering community. More importantly, we can contribute to a future in which engineering continues to serve humanity and create meaningful impact for Hong Kong, the region, and beyond.

Building on the legacy of those who came before us, we can unlock the future by adopting AI and emerging technologies with purpose and responsibility. From smart grids and digital substations to predictive maintenance and data-driven asset management, these tools can enhance safety, reliability, efficiency, and sustainability. By promoting responsible innovation, the Division can help members stay ahead of change and translate emerging technologies into practical benefits for society.

During this transition, I believe our Division can serve as a strong platform for knowledge sharing, professional development, and cross-sector collaboration. In alignment with the President’s long-term vision, we will support the three interdependent pillars of Sustainability, Evolution, and Engagement by helping our members navigate change, develop practical solutions, and translate innovation into real-world value for our community.

We are also approaching a significant milestone: our Division’s 50th Anniversary in 2027/2028. This will be an important opportunity not only to celebrate how far we have come, but also to reaffirm our mission, strengthen our professional network, and engage more members, especially students and young engineers, in the work ahead. I look forward to your continued support and active participation in our forthcoming 50th Anniversary activities, which will honour our heritage while showcasing the innovations that will shape our next chapter.

At the same time, we will continue to build on the Division’s established flagship activities, including the Annual Symposium, Energy Innovation for Smart City Competition, Electrical Model Design Contest, Annual Dinner, technical seminars, professional courses, conferences, and local and overseas technical visits. These platforms will remain important channels for knowledge exchange, professional development, industry networking, and member engagement, while supporting the Division’s wider objectives of sustainability, innovation, and collaboration.

To turn this vision into action, I propose three priorities for the year ahead: advancing decarbonisation, accelerating professional evolution through emerging technologies, and empowering the next generation of engineers through stronger engagement.

First, decarbonisation. We support Hong Kong’s Climate Action Plan 2050 and the national “dual carbon” goals. Electrical engineers can help turn policy into measurable outcomes by integrating renewable energy, improving energy efficiency, and deploying smart technologies across generation, transmission, distribution, and end use.

As a Division, we can contribute by curating practical sharing sessions, site visits, and cross-sector collaborations so that good ideas can be translated into standards, projects, and measurable carbon-reduction outcomes.

Second, professional evolution. We will encourage our members to embrace digital transformation, artificial intelligence, and other emerging technologies responsibly and confidently. Through seminars, technical visits, and practical knowledge exchange, the Division can help members strengthen their competence, enhance service quality, and prepare for the evolving requirements of the profession.

Third, youth development. We will nurture the next generation through school outreach, mentorship, and stronger engagement pathways for students and young engineers, enabling them to gain exposure, build confidence, and grow into future leaders of our profession. Active collaboration with schools and universities will be essential to making this vision a success.
Finally, let us carry forward our proud legacy, connect minds across our profession, unlock the future through innovation, and empower our young engineers to shape our shared success.
