Chairman's Message

Dear Fellow Members,

 

It is my great honour to serve as Chairman of the Safety Specialist Committee (SSC) for Session 2026/2027. I would like to express my sincere appreciation to our past Chairmen, Committee Members and fellow professionals whose dedication has advanced the development of Safety Engineering in Hong Kong.

Building upon the Institution’s theme of “Connect Minds, Empower Tomorrow”, the Committee will continue to foster collaboration, professional excellence and innovation in support of a safer and more sustainable future.

 

As Hong Kong embraces increasingly sophisticated infrastructure and emerging technologies, safety engineering must evolve alongside the changing needs of society. Safety should not be viewed solely as a compliance requirement; it is a fundamental component of engineering excellence, sustainable development and quality project delivery.

In the coming year, the Safety Specialist Committee will continue to champion Design for Safety (DfS) as a core engineering principle. By integrating safety considerations into planning and design, engineers can improve constructability, operability and maintainability while delivering better outcomes throughout the asset lifecycle. Through technical exchanges, industry collaboration and best-practice sharing, we aim to further strengthen the application of DfS across different engineering disciplines.

The Committee will also promote the adoption of emerging technologies, including artificial intelligence, digital twins, BIM, robotics and smart monitoring systems. These innovations provide engineers with enhanced capabilities for decision-making, risk management and productivity improvement, supporting the Institution’s vision for innovation and technological evolution.

 

Developing future engineering leaders remains a key priority. Through mentoring, technical activities and professional engagement, we will continue to nurture young engineers with the knowledge, competence and mindset needed to build a strong and enduring safety culture.

 

Looking ahead, the Committee believes it is timely for the profession and society to explore whether Hong Kong should cultivate a larger pool of engineers with specialised expertise in Safety Engineering. As engineering systems become increasingly complex, dedicated safety professionals can play a greater role in risk-informed design, system assurance and the protection of people, assets and communities.

 

By connecting expertise, embracing innovation and strengthening professional competency, we can further enhance public confidence in engineering and demonstrate the positive contribution of our profession to society.
