Design for Safety Excellence Award 2027
Objective
We are excited to announce that applications for the Design for Safety Excellence Award 2027 are now open. The award recognises outstanding achievements in safety design, innovation, and sustainability. Our goal is to cultivate a culture of safety that encourages continuous improvement and establishes new industry standards, contributing to a safer and more sustainable future. For our student category, the objective is to promote safety and health engineering and science innovation, providing an open platform for students to demonstrate their engineering capabilities.

Categories
Category 1: Mega Project
This category recognises outstanding safety design and innovation in projects with a total project sum of three billion HK dollars or more. Judges will assess how effectively safety elements are integrated throughout the project lifecycle, considering scalability, technology integration, and risk management strategies. Projects in this category should demonstrate significant advancements in safety practices that can set benchmarks for large-scale ventures.
Category 2: Major Project
This category recognises outstanding safety design and innovation in projects with a total project sum of less than three billion HK dollars. Judges will assess how effectively safety elements are integrated throughout the project lifecycle, considering scalability, technology integration, and risk management strategies. Projects in this category should demonstrate significant advancements in safety practices that can set benchmarks for large-scale ventures.
Category 3: RMAA Project
This category focuses on Repair, Maintenance, Alteration, and Addition (RMAA) projects, celebrating innovative safety solutions in existing structures. Submissions should detail how safety improvements have been effectively implemented in RMAA contexts, emphasising adaptability, user-centric enhancements, and the ability to conduct thorough hazard analyses. This category aims to promote safety advancements in the maintenance and alteration of established infrastructure.
Category 4: Innovative Idea
This category invites individual entries that showcase creative ideas capable of significantly enhancing safety within the construction and engineering sectors. Participants are encouraged to propose novel approaches, concepts, or technologies that effectively address safety concerns. Think outside the box and present ideas that could lead to transformative changes in safety practices. This category is particularly welcoming to fresh perspectives, including those from students, as it aims to foster innovative thinking and develop solutions that prioritise safety for all.
Category 5: Student (Student Project Award)
This category is dedicated to final year thesis / researches / projects (completed within the past 2 years). Types include research, outline design, detailed design, or model kit in related engineering disciplines. Contents must be significantly related to safety and health matters. Applications will be screened by the Organizing Committee (OC) via submission documents, with shortlisted candidates invited to the final round presentation.
Judging Criteria
Submissions will be evaluated according to the criteria detailed in the official Application Form.
Awards and Prizes
Categories 1–4 (Per Category)
- Gold Award: A trophy and a cash prize of HK$20,000
- Silver Award: A trophy and a cash prize of HK$10,000
- Bronze Award: A trophy and a cash prize of HK$5,000
Category 5 – Student Project Award
- Champion: A certificate and a cash coupon of HK$2,000 (per student/team)
- Runner-up: A certificate and a cash coupon of HK$500 (per student/team)
- Certificate of Merit: For merit projects
Selection Process & Award Ceremony
Applicants will be shortlisted and invited for a presentation in late February 2027. The award presentation ceremony will take place at the HKIE – SSC Annual Dinner on 6 May 2027 at the Holiday Inn.
