Welcome to the 2026/27 session—the 48th session of the Structural Division of the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers.
It is a great honour to take on the Chairmanship at a time of rapid change and remarkable achievement. I am deeply grateful to our Immediate Past Chairman, Ir Prof Ray SU Kai-leung, for his dedicated leadership and service. I also thank all past Chairmen and committee members for their hard work over the years. Their efforts have built a strong foundation for our Division.
This year marks the 20th anniversary of the Structural Excellence Award, and we are delighted to have received a record 33 entries—24 building projects and 9 research projects—reflecting the vibrancy and professionalism of our structural engineering community. The judging criteria placed strong emphasis on originality, technical complexity, sustainability, and contribution to society, with particular weight given to digital application and low-carbon design in line with Hong Kong’s Carbon Neutrality 2050 Blueprint. The winning projects this year exemplify how innovation and cutting-edge technology can drive sustainable outcomes—from advanced digital modelling and prefabrication to the use of low-carbon materials and circular construction methods. These achievements underscore the critical role our profession plays in building a safer, greener, and more resilient city.
Building on this momentum, we will continue to embrace digital innovation and sustainable practice throughout the session ahead. Artificial intelligence and data-driven tools are transforming structural engineering—from design optimisation and predictive modelling to intelligent monitoring and risk assessment. Through our seminars, workshops, and technical visits, we will equip our members with practical knowledge to harness these technologies effectively. At the same time, we will promote low-carbon materials, circular construction methods, and lifecycle thinking, recognising our responsibility to reduce carbon emissions and enhance climate resilience.
We also remain committed to nurturing young talent. Career talks, student competitions, and outreach activities will give the next generation a clear view of what structural engineering offers and why it matters.
I look forward to working with our office bearers, committee members, and all of you. Your support and participation are what make our Division strong. Wishing everyone a rewarding and successful year ahead.
Sincerely Yours,
Ir Rayson WONG Wai-hung
Chairman of HKIE Structural Division 2026-2027
