Artificial Intelligence has evolved from early expert systems to today’s powerful AI agent frameworks, reshaping how organizations design and deploy software. This seminar will review the evolution of AI from expert systems to modern agent systems and examine the disruptive impact of AI agents on traditional software models. The discussion will focus on management, governance, and deployment of contemporary AI systems, covering data curation and governance, accountability, cybersecurity, human oversight, red teaming, supplier management, and risk control. Participants will gain practical insights into how organizations can adopt and manage AI responsibly to create business value, while also gaining hands‑on experience with modern AI systems.

Dr. Ho Sang LAM, Chairman of AIKm, is an expert in data science and computing engineering with extensive experience applying large language models for precise knowledge retrieval. His career spans leadership roles at VTech, Schneider Electric, Oregon Scientific, HK Productivity Council, and Polaroid, with contributions to 3D optical recognition, product innovation, and AI safety. Holding multiple degrees, patents, and awards, Dr. Lam integrates academic and industrial expertise to advance responsible AI development, while also pursuing personal interests in hiking and modern mathematics.

Seminar on “Management and Governance Aspects in AI Projects”

The Technical Seminar on “Management and Governance Aspects in AI Projects” was organized by the HKIE Electronics Division on 5 October 2026. The seminar featured two distinguished experts: Dr. Ho Sang Lam, Chairman and Chief Scientist of the Machine Learning Institute for Enterprise Knowledge Management (AIKm), and Prof. Dr. Kelvin Wan, Board Advisor & Master Trainer of AIKm and Chair of the AI Project and Product Management SIG. Together, they delivered an insightful presentation addressing the shift toward autonomous AI systems and the engineering rigor required to manage probabilistic AI effectively.
Dr. Lam opened the session by tracing the evolution of AI systems from 1950s rule-based expert systems to statistical machine learning, deep learning, transformers, and today’s agentic systems that plan, use tools, and take autonomous actions. He emphasized that as AI shifts from verifying fixed rules to validating learned, probabilistic behaviors, governance must evolve accordingly. He introduced the seven core components of a production agent harness, including system prompts, tool layers, context management, long-term memory, guardrails, verification, and observability. He also outlined an autonomy ladder ranging from simple assistants to multi-agent systems. Dr. Lam highlighted key AI project management frameworks, including the Master AI Project Lifecycle, local governance standards, e.g., Digital Policy Office Ethical AI Framework, PCPD guidelines, and international risk standards such as ISO/IEC 42001 and NIST AI RMF. He stressed that human accountability, strict acceptance testing, and progressive autonomy governance are vital to prevent accountability gaps when scaling AI applications.
