Vacuum thin films are the hidden enablers behind today’s most exciting technologies, from solar energy and OLED displays to advanced medical coatings. This seminar will spotlight the cutting‑edge field of compound and reactive sputtering, where engineers can “engineer” materials atom by atom to unlock new performance at the micro‑ and nano‑scale. We will showcase how Direct Current (DC) and Radio Frequency (RF) sputtering methods are chosen to match material properties, why thin films often lose critical elements during deposition, and how reactive gases such as oxygen or nitrogen can be introduced to restore balance and achieve the right film composition. A key focus will be the comparison between RF sputtering, valued for its precision but slower in speed, and DC reactive sputtering, which achieves faster deposition and broader tunability but requires sharper process control. By connecting these workflows to applications across electronics, energy, and medical technology, the session aims to spark curiosity and show how sputtering is not just a technical process but a powerful tool for creating materials that drive innovation and shape the future.

Mr. Charlie Hu is a senior manager of Asia PED Technical Sales/Technical Support/Service of Kurt J. Lesker Company with over 16 years of experience specializing in thin film deposition techniques including magnetron and reactive sputtering, e‑beam and thermal evaporation, and atomic layer deposition. With expertise spanning both system hardware and process optimization, he has helped advance projects across electronics, energy, and advanced materials, bringing practical insights into how sputtering can be tuned to enable next‑generation technologies.
