It is an honour to serve as Chairman of the HKIE Geotechnical Division (GD) for Session 2025/26. I extend my sincere appreciation to our Immediate Past Chairman, Ir Dr SW Lee, and all past chairpersons for their exemplary leadership. Their efforts have built a solid foundation for advancing geotechnical excellence, fostering innovation, and driving professional growth.
The theme of our President, Ir Alice Chow, “Together We RISE” (同心同創), reflects the aspirations of our profession. The pillars of Resilience, Innovation, Sustainability, and Equity (RISE) guide us as we tackle critical challenges and seize opportunities to shape Hong Kong’s future.
Geotechnical engineering has been pivotal to Hong Kong’s transformation into a global metropolis. As we face climate change, urban densification, and sustainability demands, our profession stands at a crucial juncture. The solutions we implement today will strengthen the city’s resilience and sustainability for years to come.
This session, our focus will be:
- Resilience: Developing adaptive infrastructure to address future challenges.
- Innovation: Leveraging technologies such as AI and digital twins to transform practices.
- Sustainability: Advancing eco-friendly methods like low-carbon construction and nature-based solutions.
- Equity: Empowering young engineers, fostering diversity, and showcasing geotechnical contributions.
The Geotechnical Paper Award, revived in this golden jubilee year, will celebrate innovative research that advances local practice. Winners will be recognised at the HKIE Geotechnical Division Annual Seminar, inspiring knowledge sharing and collaboration.
We will also strengthen partnerships with the Greater Bay Area and international peers to establish Hong Kong as a global leader in smart geotechnical solutions.
Geotechnical engineering is about protecting communities, enabling progress, and building the future. Together, let us rise to challenges and create a lasting legacy.
