Theme
The HKIE Geotechnical Division Annual Seminar 2026 is pleased to announce its theme: “Fundamentals and First Principles: Bridging Theory and Practice in Geotechnical Engineering.” This theme underscores the essential role of foundational engineering concepts in linking sound theoretical understanding with practical design and application. By revisiting first principles, we aim to better integrate theory with field experience, enabling engineers not only to apply current technologies effectively but also to pioneer the next generation of geotechnical innovations.
The theme encourages a renewed focus on learning, applying, and advancing the fundamentals that support sustainable progress in infrastructure development, site works, and environmental adaptation. It conveys the message that lasting technological advancement and resilience in engineering practice are grounded in a firm grasp of first principles.
Topics Relevant to the Theme
Members, practitioners and academics are invited to submit papers on topics and cases relevant to the theme,
such as:
1. Practical applications of first principles in geotechnical design
2. Advances in testing, monitoring, and numerical modeling techniques
3. Site formation and infrastructure development
4. Excavation and lateral support systems
5. Slope upgrading and stability enhancement works
6. Foundation engineering and design
7. Reclamation techniques and ground improvement methods
8. Tunnel and cavern design, construction, and innovation
9. Sustainability, resilience, and climate adaptation in geotechnical practice
10. Application of new technologies and innovation in geotechnical engineering
