On 16 September 2023, we had the incredible opportunity to visit the Central Kowloon Route – Kai Tak West Contract. The Central Kowloon Route is a game-changer, as it not only relieves traffic congestion on existing east-west roads across Central Kowloon, but also enhances linkages between districts. With a 4.7 km long dual 3-lane trunk road, this project connects the Yau Ma Tei Interchange of West Kowloon with the Kai Tak Development Area and road network of Kowloon Bay. We would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to the Client, the Highways Department, the Consultant Arup- Mott Macdonald Joint Venture, and the Contractor Gammon for their tremendous efforts in making this project a reality. The Kai Tak West Contract specifically focuses on the construction of the Ma Tau Kok Access Shaft for Central Tunnel, cut-and-cover tunnels at Ma Tau Kok and Kai Tak, a 370m long underwater tunnel at Kowloon Bay, and underpasses and depressed roads at Kai Tak. During our visit, we had the privilege of learning about the works and challenges of this project through an enlightening experience sharing session. We were then taken on a captivating site tour to witness the construction progress firsthand. We congratulate everyone involved in this remarkable project and look forward to witnessing its completion. The Central Kowloon Route will undoubtedly pave the way for enhanced connectivity and development in the heart of Kowloon.
