Our members had an incredible opportunity to attend the site visit and technical seminar on the use of dredged sediments on 11 and 12 November 2023. Co-organized by HKIEGD and PolyU, and jointly organized by the Ground Improvement Professional Committee of the Guangdong Geotechnical Mechanics and Engineering Society, this event provided valuable insights into innovative applications of ground improvement on reclamation work. The seminar commenced with inspiring speeches from the Society Vice President Dong Zhiliang and HKIEGD Chairman Ir Dr Gavin Toh. Dr. Hu Liwen, Dr. Hu Heng, and Prof. Jian-Hua Yin delivered enlightening presentations on environment-friendly soft ground treatment and sustainable reclamation methods. The Q&A session, led by Dr. Andy Leung, facilitated thought-provoking discussions. Our members also enjoyed a guided visit to the Reclamation Site in the Nansha Port Area, which offered valuable insights. On day 2, we visited the Zhuhai Harbor Shenhua Coal Terminal. This site visit provided our members with a unique opportunity to witness firsthand the design and infrastructure of the coal terminal, such as the land having been reclaimed using dredged sediments that was surcharged using vacuum preloading method. We would like to express our heartfelt gratitude to our hosts for their warm hospitality and generous invitation to explore this impressive facility. It was truly an eye-opening experience to see the meticulous planning and execution that goes into the design of such a crucial installation.
