Relevant Mechanical Engineering Research Experiences

Area #1 – Applying Mechanical Engineering Knowledge (C1, C2, C11)

C1. Comprehend and apply knowledge of accepted principles underpinning good practice for professional engineering

–          Apply professional knowledge and skills of MNA, such as establishing comprehensive new building management, maintenance and docking plan, conducting repairing work, replacement of key equipment, alteration and addition work, implement, operate and maintain or investigate incidents;

–          Provide engineering design and professional advice to improve of any existing engineering design or system in enhancing constructability, operability, maintainability, reliability and efficiency of MNA systems, including ship safety, anti-pollution, seafarers, ship registration, management system, dangerous goods etc in accordance with international conventions.

C2. Comprehend and apply knowledge of accepted principles specific to Hong Kong

–          Understand and familiar with local legislations and their codes, guidelines, notices with respect to Hong Kong registered ships, river trade vessels and local vessels such as Merchant Shipping Ordinance (Cap. 369), Merchant Shipping (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Ordinance (Cap. 413), Merchant Shipping (Registration) Ordinance (Cap. 415), Merchant Shipping (Seafarers) Ordinance (Cap. 478), Merchant Shipping (Local Vessels) Ordinance (Cap. 548);

–          Apply professional knowledge and skills in accordance with local requirements, to design, implement, operate and maintain, investigate incidents or provide professional advice on material, construction, maintenance plan, docking plan, repair work, replacement of key equipment and alteration and addition work.

C11. Maintain currency of professional engineering knowledge and skills

Organize and attend related CPD activities in accordance with HKIE CPD requirements.

Area #2 – Developing Technical Solutions (C3, C4)

C3. Define, investigate and resolve complex engineering problems

–          Plan and supervise the development, material, construction, installation, operation, maintenance or repair of ship equipment and systems (including management systems), etc;

–          Investigate infrequently encountered complex engineering problems without precedent reference of solutions and be responsible to resolve the problems with originality in analysis;

–          Develop engineering investigation plans and procedures to simulate or generate the problems and collect, organize, analysis relevant information to identify the root cause(s) of complex engineering problem.

C4. Design or develop solutions to engineering problems

Design or develop solutions for ship construction, equipment and systems to meet the defined requirements and objectives.

Area #3 – Managing Engineering Work (C5, C6, C7, C12)

C5. Be responsible for making decisions on part or all of one or more complex engineering activities

–          Be responsible for the management of new building, update requirements of international conventions, installation and/or maintenance of ship equipment and systems, etc;

–          Manage the use of diverse resources including people, money, equipment, materials, time and technologies;

–          Participate the resolution of critical problems arising from interactions between wideranging technical, engineering and other issues.

C6. Manage part or all of one or more complex engineering activities

–          Supervise, manage and improve new building, ship maintenance, equipment and systems (including management systems), etc and inspect the quality of the work and to deal with any problems that arise;

–          Review and assess the applicability and extent of new requirements of international conventions to Hong Kong ships and Hong Kong local vessels.

C7. Identify, assess and manage engineering risk

–          Conduct risk assessment and manage the risks associated with ship building, installation, operation, repair, maintenance and overhaul of ship equipment and systems, failure mode and effect analysis (FMEA) etc;

–          Manage extraordinary and emergency situations such as safety, environmental, operation, certification, security, detention, etc.

C12. Exercise sound professional engineering judgement

Be responsible for engineering activities requiring judgement in technical, manpower, financial, safety, security, time, environment aspects.

Area #4 – Upkeeping Professional Acumen (C8, C9, C10)

C8. Conduct engineering activities to an ethical standard prescribed by the HKIE

Understand and familiar with HKIE ethical standard and integrity, and show how to apply them in projects.

C9. Recognise the reasonably foreseeable social, cultural, health, safety, sustainability and environmental effects

Commit and contribute to social, cultural, health, safety, sustainability, and environmental aspects as a professional member.

C10. Communicate clearly with other engineers and stakeholders

Demonstrate the effective communication skills with workers, engineers, ship crew, shipyards, ship managers, port administrations, stakeholders and public related to design, implementation, operation and maintenance, incidents investigation and providing professional advice on MNA systems.
