MCL – Research

HKIE Competence RequirementsRelevant Mechanical Engineering Research Experiences
Area #1 – Applying Mechanical Engineering Knowledge (C1, C2, C11)
C1. Comprehend and apply knowledge of accepted principles underpinning good practice for professional engineeringApply mechanical engineering principles such as solid mechanics, thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, vibration, control, and materials science to design, implement, operate, and maintain research projects.
C2. Comprehend and apply knowledge of accepted principles specific to Hong KongUnderstand statutory requirements, local codes of practice, standards, and regulations relevant to system operation and maintenance in Hong Kong.
C11. Maintain currency of professional engineering knowledge and skillsParticipate in CPD activities, seminars, and technical training to stay updated with engineering advancements and research methodologies.
Area #2 – Developing Technical Solutions (C3, C4)
C3. Define, investigate and resolve complex engineering problemsInvestigate and resolve complex mechanical engineering problems related to system operation and thermal mechanisms; supervise development and implementation in research projects.
C4. Design or develop solutions to engineering problemsDesign solutions considering health, safety, environmental, and cost factors; implement systems that meet research objectives and constraints.
Area #3 – Managing Engineering Work (C5, C6, C7, C12)
C5. Be responsible for making decisions on part or all of one or more complex engineering activitiesManage systems and resources for research projects; oversee planning, budgeting, and execution of engineering tasks.
C6. Manage part or all of one or more complex engineering activitiesSupervise installation and quality control of research systems; resolve issues during implementation and ensure compliance with standards.
C7. Identify, assess and manage engineering riskConduct risk assessments for installation, maintenance, and operation of research systems; implement mitigation strategies.
C12. Exercise sound professional engineering judgementMake informed decisions in research activities involving technical, manpower, financial, safety, and environmental considerations.
Area #4 – Upkeeping Professional Acumen (C8, C9, C10)
C8. Conduct engineering activities to an ethical standard prescribed by the HKIEUnderstand and uphold HKIE ethical standards in all research activities; demonstrate integrity and professionalism.
C9. Recognise the reasonably foreseeable social, cultural, health, safety, sustainability and environmental effectsAddress social, cultural, and environmental impacts of research projects; incorporate sustainability and safety considerations.
C10. Communicate clearly with other engineers and stakeholdersCommunicate effectively with students, technicians, engineers, and professors; understand the broader context of research execution and collaborate across disciplines.

Exemplar on Training and Experience Report

Background

  1. Periods of Training and Experience
  2. Chronological order, giving inclusive dates in months and years
  3. As details of duties can be found in application form, they may not be repeated in this report.

Professional Experiences

  1. State the Applicant’s precise positions have occupied in each case and describe clearly the degree of the Applicant’s responsibility assigned; use the first person (I, me, my) to show Applicant’s personal contribution;
  2. Indicate the size and cost of the works; keep in about 3 – 4 projects or works demonstrating all competences;
  3. Elaborate on any particular problems encountered and how the Applicant arrived at viable solutions with consideration of options or alternatives;
  4. Provide evidence to demonstrate the competences (At most four relevant competences should be quoted at a time)
  5. Provide evidence or examples of recent work to support their claim of attaining professional status, such as reports, plans, calculations, photographs, etc. as appropriate
