香港工程師學會頒發三項工程界的殊榮予傑出工程師 The Hong Kong Institution of Engineers Conferred Three Engineering Awards to Outstanding Engineers
(香港.3月16日) 香港工程師學會於2012年3月13日所舉行的第37屆周年晚宴中,頒發了3項工程界的殊榮。朱琰光工程師獲學會頒發「會長特設成就獎」;陳禧棪工程師獲頒本年度「傑出青年工程師獎」;至於第五年舉辦的「香港工程師學會青年會員創意獎」,則由鄧紹祥工程師在獎項之組別II奪得。 會長特設成就獎2012 為表揚對學會有特殊貢獻的會員,學會設立了「會長特設成就獎」。本年度獲選之會員為朱琰光工程師。 朱琰光工程師於1981年在香港理工學院完成電機工程高級文憑課程,並於1983年以一級榮譽成績取得香港大學電機工程學士學位。他在2000年亦獲香港大學頒授公共行政碩士學位。 1985年在機電工程署完成工程畢業生培訓計劃後,朱工程師被聘任為助理工程師並借調到建築署,開展事業。目前,他是該署的高級屋宇裝備工程師。 朱工程師在電機及屋宇裝備工程有資深專業工作經驗。他多年來負責設計和管理不同類型的建築工程,並為政府資助的工程項目提供專業技術顧問服務。 他對建築工程的工料測量亦有豐富經驗。在香港測量師學會《香港建築工程標準計量方法 (HKSMM4) 第四版》編寫委員會的屋宇裝備工程組中,代表政府提供專業意見。該版已於2006年成功發行。 朱工程師致力於香港工程師學會的活動。他在 1986年加入電機分部,擔任助理名譽秘書一職。其後成為該分部委員。在超過 20 年的服務中,他為電機分部組織了很多不同的活動,包括技術講座、專題研討會、國際會議、學校比賽、以至內地和海外的技術考察等。他在協調相關人事以使活動順利組織和推動方面,扮演關鍵角色。過去多年,他是分部的名譽司庫,亦是年度研討會的名譽秘書。他是論文《成功組織會議和研討會的路線圖》的作者之一。該論文於 2003年在國際電機工程會議發表,以分享他對該題目多年來的心得。 他是《EE筆寫》編輯工作組的主要成員。這是電機分部所編寫的第一本同類中文書籍,旨在提高市民對電機工程的興趣和認識。 除學術活動外,朱工程師亦是學會資歷評核政策委員會屬下的電機界別顧問小組的成員。他多年為該小組的名譽秘書。他也曾是學會培訓檢討小組—第二組別的成員,亦是香港專業教育學院課程評審小組的組員。 傑出青年工程師獎2012 承接往年的熱烈反應,香港工程師學會今年再度舉行「傑出青年工程師獎2012」。候選的青年工程師無論在工程專業、社會事務以及學會會務上均有出色的成就及貢獻,評審委員會透過多番嚴格審核與面試,精挑細選當中表現最突出的青年工程師陳禧棪工程師成為本年度的得主。 陳禧棪工程師畢業於加拿大英屬哥倫比亞大學,考獲計算機工程學士學位,繼而完成英國布拉德福德大學工商管理碩士學位,現在香港大學修讀公共行政碩士課程。 陳工程師的專業是資訊工程。而擁有工程、商業及社會科學結合的教育背景,讓他能在機電工程署更宏觀地處理技術、財務和行政等工程管理工作。陳工程師亦不時將他的專業知識應用於工作上,例如他引進中央客戶資料庫管理系統,這系統在機電工程署2011年度最佳改善個案比賽中獲獎。 陳工程師對服務香港工程師學會及廣大社會亦不遺餘力。他是2009/2010年度,香港工程師學會青年會員事務委員會主席;現任學會資訊科技分部名譽司庫。陳工程師亦連續三年獲得「香港工程師學會專業人士義工服務嘉許計劃」最高榮譽獎項。而在過去五年,陳工程師多次代表學會組織及參與推廣聯繫本地及海外年青專業人士交流的活動,曾到訪的國家包括巴西、加拿大、日本、新加坡及英國,而國內城市則有北京、天津、成都、武漢及鄭州等。 在社會公益方面,陳工程師是發展局四川重建組的義工;也是香港能源工程師學會義務秘書及機電工程署專業工程師協會理事。他亦是香港小童群益會師友計劃的導師及職業訓練局青年建造探索挑戰賽籌委會成員。 本年度,除「傑出青年工程師獎」外,學會亦同時頒發優異獎予李冠忠工程師。 香港工程師學會青年會員創意獎2012 為鼓勵學會青年會員透過創新應用工程知識以發揮創意,喚起他們於知性和工作方面對工程的興趣,學會第五度舉辦「香港工程師學會青年會員創意獎2012」,並得到已故會員歐陽國盛工程師家人贊助是次活動。參賽作品必須屬於學會專業界別的範疇,設計的原創性及創意均為主要評審準則。比賽分兩個組別,包括組別I — 發明,以及組別II — 創新應用。本年度的大獎得主為組別II之鄧紹祥工程師。 組別II — 創新應用 使用嶄新光纖傳感器技術監測鐵路列車動態性能 - 鄧紹祥工程師 獲獎的項目是一個監測鐵路列車動態性能的創新技術。採用電傳感器為基礎的傳統監測方法,不但需要安裝複雜和昂貴的儀器,而且亦需要投入大量人手參與。這些限制使傳統方法不能有成本效益地持續監測列車動態性能。直至這個光纖傳感器系統的研發,終能帶來一個突破性的解決方案。 這個安裝於軌道的創新光纖傳感器系統具顯著的成本效益,可持續監察列車的舒適度及車輪的負載力,這是傳統監測方法無法實現的。這個光纖系統現在安裝於港鐵公司,有效地幫助維修工程師更緊密地監測列車,以作出更快捷適時的維修安排,其效能被高度讚賞。項目為鐵路營運商、研究人員和公眾都帶來效益,可節省成本、提高生產力和發揮高效的狀態監測,大大提升列車運行的穩定性及達至不斷改善客運服務的目標。 鄧紹祥工程師於香港大學取得電能系統工程(一級榮譽)學士及電機電子工程碩士(優異)學位。自1999年畢業後,主要從事鐵路車輛設計、項目及維修方面的工作。他現為港鐵公司鐵路車輛維修部的車廠工程師。 本年度,學會亦同時頒發優異獎予組別I的李永輝工程師和組別II的呂浩元工程師、沈健發工程師、馬志威先生及岑智明先生。 如有查詢,請與香港工程師學會傳訊統籌部聯絡。電話︰2895 4446; 傳真︰2203 4133; 電郵︰corpcom@hkie.org.hk。 (16 March 2012, Hong Kong) Three engineering awards, organised by the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers, have been presented at the 37th Annual Dinner of the Institution which was successfully held on 13 March 2012. “The President’s Award 2012” was conferred on Ir Chu Yim-kwong, the “Young Engineer of the Year Award 2012” was presented to Ir Leo H Y Chan, and the “HKIE Innovation Awards for Young Members 2012” went to Ir Simon S C Tang of Category II. The President's Award 2012 In recognition of the dedicated and valuable service of the member of any class who has served the Institution with distinctive achievements, the President’s Award has been set up by the Institution. This year, Ir Chu Yim-kwong receives the honour of the President’s Award. Ir Chu Yim-kwong obtained a Higher Diploma in Electrical Engineering from the Hong Kong Polytechnic in 1981 and a BSc (Eng) (first class honour) in Electrical Engineering from the University of Hong Kong in 1983. He was also conferred a Master Degree in Public Administration by the University of Hong Kong in 2000. Following completion of Scheme “A” training at the Electrical and Mechanical Services Department in 1985, Ir Chu was seconded to the Architectural Services Department to start his professional career as an Assistant Building Services Engineer. He is currently a Senior Building Services Engineer in the same department. Ir Chu has in-depth experience in both electrical and building services engineering gleaned from the design and management of a diverse range of building projects and the provision of professional technical advice to government subvented projects. Ir Chu is also proficient in quantity surveying for building services. He was the government representative in the Building Services (BS) Working Group of the Hong Kong Institute of Surveyors (HKIS) to provide professional advice on BS parts of the 4th Edition of Hong Kong Standard Method of Measurement (HKSMM4) of Building Works, which was successfully launched in 2006. Ir Chu is strongly committed to institutional activities. In 1986, he served as the Assistant Honorary Secretary of the HKIE Electrical Division, where he later became a Committee Member. In more than 20 years of service to the Division, Ir Chu has been pivotal in the organisation of many technical talks, symposiums, international conferences, school project competitions and Mainland and overseas technical visits. He was the Honorary Secretary of the annual symposiums as well as the Division’s Honorary Treasurer. He shared his insight in a paper he co-authored, entitled “Road Map for Success in Organising Conference and Symposium”, which was submitted to the International Conference of Electrical Engineering in 2003. Ir Chu was a key member of the editorial team for "EE筆寫", a book in Chinese written to arouse the public’s interest in electrical engineering. It was the first of its kind to be published by the Electrical Division. Besides learned society functions, Ir Chu is also a member of the Electrical Discipline Advisory Panel, of which he had been the Honorary Secretary for years. In addition, Ir Chu was a member of the Training Review Sub-committee – Group II and a member of the team that accredits Hong Kong Institute of Vocational Education courses. Young Engineer of the Year Award 2012 In line with the overwhelming response of the Young Engineer of the Year Award in previous years, the HKIE is pleased to organise the Young Engineer of the Year Award 2012. It was glad that all candidates have had significant contributions and outstanding achievements to the profession, to the community of Hong Kong and to the HKIE. The selection process has been competitive, hence the decision on the selection has never been easy for the Panel of Judges. This year, the Award goes to Ir Leo H Y Chan. Ir Leo Chan has a BASc in Computer Engineering from the University of British Columbia and an MBA from the University of Bradford. He is now pursuing a Master Degree in Public Administration from the University of Hong Kong. Although an information engineer by training, this diverse mix of educational background in engineering, commerce and social sciences has allowed Ir Chan to think strategically when handling technical, financial and political issues as part of his engineering management duties at the Electrical and Mechanical Services Department (EMSD). Ir Chan has also utilised his knowledge of information engineering at work, one example being his introduction of a centralised client database system, which won the EMSD Best Improvement Project Competition 2011. Ir Chan is committed to serving the HKIE and the community. He was the Chairman of the HKIE Young Members Committee (2009/2010) and is now serving as the Honorary Treasurer of the HKIE Information Technology Division. As a Grand Leadership Award winner for three consecutive years under the HKIE Volunteers Service Accreditation Programme, Ir Chan has organised many learned society functions to foster connection with both local and overseas young professionals. Countries like Brazil, Canada, Japan, Singapore and the UK as well as Mainland cities such as Beijing, Tianjin, Chengdu, Wuhan and Zhengzhou are just some of the destinations he has visited on behalf of the Institution in the last five years. Ir Chan is a volunteer of the Development Bureau’s Sichuan Reconstruction Team, Honorary Secretary of the Hong Kong Association of Energy Engineers and Council Member of the EMSD’s Association of Professional Engineers. He is also a mentor for the Boys’ and Girls’ Clubs Association of Hong Kong and an organising committee member of the Vocational Training Council Construction Discovery Challenge Programme. This year, Ir Johnson K C Lee was also presented the Certificate of Merit. The HKIE Innovation Awards for Young Members 2012 With an aim to encourage our young members to develop their creativity through innovative application of engineering knowledge, and to inspire upon them to develop their intellectual and career interests in engineering, the Institution is pleased to launch the HKIE Innovation Awards for Young Members at 2008, a new initiative with the generous support of the family of the late Ir Kenneth Au-yeung. The entry can focus on any areas of engineering disciplines within the context of the HKIE. There are two main categories, namely Category I - An Invention and Category II – An Innovative Application of Engineering Theories. The innovativeness of the Design will be assessed based on its originality and creativity. This year, the Grand Prize of Category II goes to Ir Simon S C Tang. Category II – An Innovative Application of Engineering Theories Innovative Application of Fibre Bragg Grating (FBG) Technology in Train Dynamic Performance Monitoring by Ir Simon S C Tang Conventional monitoring of train dynamic performance using electric sensors suffers from complicated and costly instrumentation and is also labour-intensive. The conventional method is consequently not a user-friendly solution for continuous train dynamic performance monitoring. Although enormous effort has been put into researching an alternative, there has been no breakthrough until the development of this fibre bragg grating (FBG) system. The track-based FBG system enables fully automatic and continuous monitoring of train ride comfort and wheel load balance in a cost-effective manner that cannot be achieved with the conventional method. This FBG system is now installed on the MTR network and has effectively facilitated continuous monitoring of train performance and the scheduling of maintenance works. By saving cost and improving service quality, the system has brought benefits to the rail operator as well as the public. Ir Simon Tang received his BEng (first class honour) in Electrical Energy Systems Engineering and MSc (distinction) in Electrical & Electronic Engineering from the University of Hong Kong. He has worked in rolling stock design, project and maintenance since his graduation in 1999 and is currently the Depot Engineer for the Rolling Stock Maintenance Department of MTR Corporation. 航空專業界別 致力為本地培育更多飛機工程專才 The Aircraft Engineering Discipline to Nurture Aircraft Engineering Professionals
(香港,二零一二年三月十五日) 香港航空業發展日益蓬勃,對飛機工程專才的需求不斷上升。為配合航空業界的發展,香港工程師學會 (下稱「學會」) 設立航空專業界別,專責制訂專業飛機工程師及技術人員在教育、培訓及經驗方面的要求,並且與業界携手合作,希望吸引更多年青人投身飛機工程專業,推動香港成為航空工程業的全球服務中心,同時鞏固香港作為亞太區航空樞紐的領先地位。 香港國際機場是世界最繁忙的航空樞紐之一,去年飛機升降量達到創紀錄的333,760架次。航空業在本港經濟發展更扮演著重要角色,根據政府統計處的資料,2009年航空業對本地經濟帶來的直接和間接貢獻高達1,163億元,佔本地生產總值的7.5%。隨著機場西停機坪落實動工,加上擬建的第三條跑道,香港航空交通業將加快發展步伐。 香港工程師學會會長陳福祥工程師表示:「培訓足夠數量的專業飛機工程人員,對支持香港航空業的進一步發展至為關鍵。鑑於飛機工程需要專業知識及技能,學會特別設立航空專業界別,負責訂定專業飛機工程師及技術人員的資格。界別顧問小組又制訂有關工程人員在教育、培訓及經驗方面所需的要求,並進行會員資格評審,藉此確立飛機工程師的專業地位,提升其社會認受性。現時航空專業界別共有331名會員,今年稍後學會將成立航空分部,為會員提供相關專業學術活動。」 為了讓有志加入飛機工程專業發展的年青人獲得系統性的培訓,學會創辦了「飛機工程師培訓計劃」,內容包括導修課程、實地考察、在職培訓、導師指導及網上支援,為大學畢業生提供一條快捷的途徑,考取由民航處授予的HKAR-66 Category B 飛機維修執照。 此外,為了讓新聞界了解專業飛機工程人員的工作,學會今日安排傳媒實地參觀位於將軍澳工業邨之香港航空發動機維修服務有限公司 (HAESL)。HAESL為本港唯一負責維修民用航機引擎的公司,僱用超過1,050名員工,去年總共完成198台飛機引擎的維修工程。 引擎仿如一架飛機的心臟,維修工程需要專門的設備及技術知識,因此HAESL特別重視工程人員的技術培訓。為配合業務擴展的需求,HAESL今年計劃增聘180名技術人員,包括工科畢業生培訓計劃的見習生及飛機引擎維修見習員,為年青人提供投身飛機工程業的良好機會。 工科畢業生培訓計劃提供為期四年的架構性培訓,首兩年為根據香港工程師學會工科畢業生計劃制訂的跨職能培訓,隨後見習生會被派往公司其中一個核心營運部門接受持續訓練。在受訓期間,見習生亦將被借調至航空公司及引擎製造商工作,讓他們對航空業有更深入的瞭解,以及熟悉商業合作夥伴之運作。 歡迎中五畢業生加入的飛機引擎維修見習員,主要負責飛機引擎元件或零件的維修工作。新入職學員需要接受160小時的基本培訓,HAESL並提供良好的晉升階梯,讓年青人得以在前景良好的飛機工程行業盡展所長。只要努力奮鬥,透過專業培訓及持續進修,見習員亦有機會晉升成為此行業的專業工程師。 未來20年將會是亞太區商用航空交通發展的重要階段。國際航空運輸協會曾估計,由2008 年至2030 年期間,香港國際機場客運量的複合年增長率為3.2%,將為有志在飛機工程方面發展的年青人創造大量機會。 此外,學會現正舉行「卓越工程建構優質生活」特備展覽,讓年青一代更深入了解工程師工作之重要性。展覽以「衣、食、住、行」為主題,透過生動有趣的形式,展示一系列圍繞我們日常生活的工程項目。例如,「衣」有利用可再生能源為電子產品充電的太陽能背包;「食」會解構香港的食水來源以至供應系統;「住」展出利用近年流行的流動裝置及無線網絡遙距操控家居電器的智能家居示範單位;而隨著學會成立航空專業界別,「行」的展區特別介紹最新型航機的製造過程和特點。展覽以生活化的內容向公眾介紹專業工程師如何運用卓越科技及工程知識,建構優質生活。 「卓越工程建構優質生活」特備展覽詳情如下:

To meet the needs of the development of the industry, the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers (HKIE) has established the Aircraft Discipline with the mission of defining the education, training and experience requirements of professional aircraft engineers and technologists. The Discipline also works closely with the industry as a whole to encourage the younger generation to pursue aircraft engineering as a career. All these initiatives aim at enhancing Hong Kong's function as a global service centre for the aerospace engineering industry and at reinforcing its position as the Asia Pacific region's premier aviation hub. As one of the busiest aviation hubs in the world, Hong Kong International Airport achieved a new record of 333,760 aircraft movements in 2011. The aviation industry also plays a crucial role in the economic development of Hong Kong. According to the Census and Statistics Department, the aviation industry's direct and indirect contributions to the local economy amounted to HK$116.3 billion in 2009, accounting for 7.5% of the GDP. With the development of the West Apron and the proposed third airport runway, Hong Kong air traffic is expected to grow at a faster pace. Ir Chan Fuk-cheung, President of the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers, said, "The provision of adequate aircraft engineering professionals is critical to support the healthy development and growth of the aviation industry. In view of the particular domain of knowledge and skills required for aircraft engineering, the HKIE has set up the Aircraft Discipline with the objective of training and qualifying professional aircraft engineers and technologists in Hong Kong. The Aircraft Engineering Discipline Advisory Panel also defines the profession's education, training and experience requirements and conducts assessments for admission to membership. In addition to nurturing and developing aircraft engineers, the Discipline also aims at raising their standing and visibility in the community. With membership in the Discipline growing to 331, the HKIE will establish the Aircraft Division later this year to provide professional and academic activities for members." The HKIE has also launched the Aircraft Engineer Development Scheme (AEDS) to offer systematic training for young people who are eager to develop their career in the aircraft engineering profession. The Scheme consists of course work, field trips, on-the-job training, mentorship, and on-line portal support. It provides a fast track for university graduates to achieve the HKAR-66 Category B Aircraft Maintenance Licence granted by the Civil Aviation Department. To give the media a better understanding of the work of aircraft engineering technologists, the HKIE today organised a media visit to Hong Kong Aero Engine Services Limited (HAESL) at Tseung Kwan O Industrial Estate. HAESL is the only facility in Hong Kong that is purpose built for the repair and maintenance of civil aircraft engines and employs more than 1,050 staff. The company completed the overhaul of 198 aero engines in 2011. Like the heart of an aero plane, the repair of an aero engine requires specific equipment and technical know-how. For that reason, technical training of technologists is HAESL's top priority. To cope with the company's expansion, HASEL plans to recruit around 180 technical staff, including Engineering Graduate Training Programme trainees and Aero Engine Repair Trainees. The positions provide an excellent career path for young people to develop their capabilities in the aircraft engineering industry. The Engineering Graduate Training Programme aims to develop a pool of professional engineers through a four-year, structured training curriculum. This comprises two years of cross-functional training within the business in line with the requirements of the HKIE Scheme A Training, followed by a two-year placement in one of the core operational units. During the training period, trainees will undertake secondments with airlines and aero engine manufacturers to broaden their understanding of the aviation industry and to give them early exposure to some of the company's major business partners. Open to form five students, the position of Aero Engine Repair Trainee is responsible for the repair of components and parts of an aero engine. Newly recruited trainees have to undergo basic training lasting a total of 160 hours. Those with a strong work ethic and a positive attitude will also have the opportunity of becoming an aircraft engineer through professional training and continuous learning. The next 20 years will see significant growth in commercial air transport in the Asia Pacific region. The International Air Transport Association has forecast that the passenger throughput of Hong Kong International Airport will grow at a compound annual rate of 3.2% between 2008 and 2030. There are ample opportunities for young people who aspire to develop their career in the field of aircraft engineering. Currently on, the HKIE's "Technology for Quality Living" Programme special exhibition has been organised to raise awareness among the younger generation on the importance of the engineering profession. The exhibition featuring "Clothing, Food, Housing and Transportation" demonstrates a series of engineering projects closely related to our daily life. For example, the "Clothing" section showcases a solar backpack that makes use of renewable energy to charge electronic devices while the "Food" section explains the source of our drinking water and the water supply system in Hong Kong. Visitors can also experience the smart home at the "Housing" section, where tablet computers and a wireless network enables remote control of home appliances. With the development of the aircraft engineering discipline, the manufacturing process and features of the latest aircrafts are featured at the "Transportation" section. The exhibition illustrates how professional engineers are bringing quality living to the public by means of their technological and engineering excellence. 「卓越工程建構優質生活」活動正式揭幕 雲集工程專業精英 解構工程項目科技應用 The Official Launch of "Technology for Quality Living" Programme
(香港,二零一二年二月十八日) 香港工程師學會 (下稱「學會」) 與香港科學館今天宣布「卓越工程建構優質生活」活動正式啟動。這項由2012年2月18日至3月28日舉行的教育性活動,豐富內容包括有特備展覽、講座系列及工程項目實地考察等,讓市民深入淺出地認識工程專業如何提升人類生活質素,對社會未來發展起關鍵作用,藉此提升年青一代對工程專業的興趣。 發展局局長林鄭月娥,GBS,JP,康樂及文化事務署署長馮程淑儀,JP,香港工程師學會會長陳福祥博士、工程師,香港科學館署理總館長薛雯女士及「卓越工程建構優質生活」專責小組主席黃維安工程師攜手主持「卓越工程建構優質生活」活動揭幕儀式。五位主禮嘉賓將分別象徵「衣、食、住、行」和「優質生活」的巨型扭蛋置於「工程專業生命樹」上,象徵工程帶動發展同時優化生活,而「卓越工程建構優質生活」活動亦隨此正式啟動。 香港工程師學會會長陳福祥博士、工程師表示:「工程世界無處不在,與我們日常生活息息相關。配合學會今年年度的工作主題「應用先進科技,提升優質生活」,學會舉辦「卓越工程建構優質生活」的一系列多元化活動,希望讓大家認識到工程專業如何提升我們的生活質素。並且加深年青一代對工程師工作的認識,希望將來有更多年青人投身工程專業行列。」 為期超過一個月的特備展覽特別以「衣、食、住、行」為主題,透過生動有趣的形式,展示一系列圍繞我們日常生活的工程項目,例如「衣」有利用可再生能源替電子產品充電的太陽能背包;「食」會解構香港的食水來源以至供應系統;「住」展出利用近年盛行的流動裝置和無線網絡遙距操控家居電器的智能家居示範單位;而隨著學會於2009年成立航空專業界別,「行」的展區更特別介紹最新型的航機的製造過程和特點。學會搜羅香港以至來自世界各地的工程項目資料和展品,以生活化的內容向公眾介紹專業工程師如何運用卓越科技及工程知識,建構優質生活。 今次活動的另一特色是專題講座與半日遊互相配合。學會很榮幸邀請到多位來自不同工程專業界別的政府官員擔任嘉賓講者,為大家講解不同範疇的科技工程。而每個講座都有學會「師傳薈」計劃的年青工程師參與其中。這群未來工程精英又會以話劇形式,在每場講座開始前,向出席市民帶出所介紹工程項目的主題。 「卓越工程建構優質生活」特備展覽詳情如下:

This educational programme takes place from 18 February to 28 March 2012. Comprising a special exhibition, a lecture series and tours of selected engineering projects, the programme is aimed at demonstrating the vital roles engineering professionals play in improving our quality of life as well as the future development of the society. In addition, the HKIE hopes that "Technology for Quality Living" Programe will engage and raise the interest of the younger generation in the engineering profession. Mrs Carrie LAM, GBS, JP, Secretary for Development, Mrs Betty FUNG CHING Suk-yee, JP, Director of Leisure and Cultural Services, Ir Dr CHAN Fuk-cheung, President of the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers, Ms Karen SIT Man, Chief Curator (Acting), Hong Kong Science Museum, Ir Duncan WONG Wai-on, Chairman, Task Force on "Technology for Quality Living" Programme host the opening ceremony together. To symbolise that engineering helps improve our quality of living and enhance the development of the society, the five officiating guests put the capsules representing "Clothing, Food, Housing and Transportation" and "Quality Living" on the "Tree of Engineering", activating the "Technology for Quality Living" Programme. Ir Dr Chan Fuk-cheung, President of the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers, said, "Engineering is in every part of our daily lives. By collaborating the theme of the Institution this year, 'Applying Frontiers of Technology for Quality Living', we have organised the 'Technology for Quality Living' Programme to help the public better understand how engineers apply technology to sustain and enhance our quality of life. We also hope the programme will foster the younger generation's interest in the engineering profession and encourage them to choose engineering as a career." The month-long special exhibition featuring "Clothing, Food, Housing and Transportation" demonstrates a series of engineering projects closely related to our daily life for example, the "Clothing" section showcases the solar backpack that make use of renewable energy to charge the electronic devices; the "Food" section shows the source of drinking water and water supply system in Hong Kong; the "Housing" section demonstrates the smart home setting allowing us to remotely control the home appliances with the rapid developing tablet computer and wireless network; since the establishment of Aircraft Engineering discipline in the HKIE in 2009, the "Transportation" section introduces the manufacturing process and features of the latest aircrafts. The HKIE collects the information of engineering projects as well as the display items from Hong Kong and different parts of the world, so as to illustrate how professional engineers are bringing quality living to the public by means of their technological and engineering excellence. In addition to the special exhibition, a series of lectures and tours on related projects will be organised. The HKIE is honoured to have government officials with backgrounds in different engineering fields as the guest speakers, and introduce broad spectrum of technology and engineering to the public. Also, young engineers of the President's Protégé Scheme (PPS) will participate in the lectures. These engineering leaders of the future will present the theme of engineering projects to public in a drama format at the beginning of every lecture.

「卓越工程建構優質生活」活動本月舉行 提升年青一代對工程專業興趣 Co-organise the "Technology for Quality Living" Programme to Foster Young People's Interest in the Engineering Profession
(香港,二零一二年二月九日) 香港工程師學會 (下稱「學會」) 與香港科學館將於2012年2月至3月期間舉辦一項名為「卓越工程建構優質生活」活動。這項為期超過一個月的教育性活動,豐富內容包括有特備展覽、講座系列及工程項目實地考察等,讓市民深入淺出地認識工程專業如何提升人類生活質素,對社會未來發展發揮重要作用,藉此激發年青一代對工程學的興趣。 香港工程師學會會長陳福祥博士、工程師表示:「市民大眾的日常生活與工程息息相關。工程業界透過科技研發結合無窮創意,將嶄新科技應用在我們身邊的事物,達到人們對優質生活的需求。學會一直致力向公眾推廣工程專業之重要性,因此今年特別舉辦「卓越工程建構優質生活」活動,希望讓更多市民了解到科技如何提升生活質素,並且加深學生對工程師工作的認識,激發年青一代對工程學的興趣,將來投身工程專業行列。」 「卓越工程建構優質生活」特備展覽以「衣、食、住、行」為主題,透過生動有趣的形式,展示一系列環繞我們日常生活的工程項目,讓參觀人士了解專業工程師如何運用卓越科技及工程知識,為巿民締造優質生活。 四大展示重點內容:

(Hong Kong, 9 February 2012) The "Technology for Quality Living" Programme, co-organised by the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers (HKIE) and the Hong Kong Science Museum, will take place from 18 February to 28 March 2012. Comprising a special exhibition, a lecture series and tours of selected engineering projects, the month-long Programme is aimed at demonstrating the vital roles engineering and technology play in economic development and in improving quality of life in Hong Kong. In addition, the HKIE hopes that "Technology for Quality Living" will engage and excite the interest of the younger generation in the engineering profession. Ir Dr Chan Fuk-cheung, President of the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers, said, "Engineering is in every part of our daily lives. By combining technology, research and development as well as creative innovation, the engineering industry has enabled people to enjoy a high quality of life. The HKIE has long been committed to promoting the importance and purpose of the engineering profession. This year, we have organised the "Technology for Quality Living" Programme to help the public better understand how engineers apply technology to sustain and enhance our quality of life. We also hope the Programme will foster students' interest in the engineering profession and encourage our younger generation to choose engineering as their career." A key part of the "Technology for Quality Living" Programme is a special exhibition organised along the themes of "Clothing, Food, Housing and Transportation". Through a dynamic showcase of several groundbreaking engineering projects, the special exhibition illustrates how professional engineers bring convenience, comfort and a host of other benefits to our daily lives through technological and engineering excellence. Highlights of the four exhibition sections are:
In addition to the special exhibition, a series of lectures and tours on selected projects will also be offered for the public's enjoyment (Please refer to Appendix 1 for details). Topics of the lecture series include "Water: From Source to Drain", "Road Network Development", "Electrical and Mechanical Engineering in the Modern City" and "IT and Hazard Control". All lectures are presented by government officials with backgrounds in different engineering fields. Lecture participants can also apply to join engineering tours to visit the Sha Tin Water Treatment Works, Tsing Ma Control Area and Tsing Sha Control Area, MTR Kowloon Bay Depot as well as Po Shan Landslide Preventive Works - Groundwater Drainage System. These activities will enable visitors to attain a better understanding of the recent efforts by various industries to make our society a greener and more sustainable one.
