| Introduction | Professional engineers play an important role in occupational safety and health. A safe design and operation on engineering works not only prevent the chance of loss due to accidents but also increase the productivity. This in turn strengthens the competitiveness of the organisation. The engineers in construction industry can help in prevention of accident by providing a safe design in construction project with due consideration of safety in construction phase and regular maintenance program after use. To enable the engineers fulfilling these duties, they need to possess knowledge in safety and health that are generally seldom included in formal curriculum during their engineering education. The Hong Kong Institution of Engineers recognises this situation and jointly organise safety training courses with Occupational Safety and Health Council for all graduate engineers. |
