The Hong Kong Institution of Engineers “The HKIE Innovation Expo” Encourages Engineering Innovations and Promotes Industry Transformation

The Enginpreneurs Award

(Hong Kong, 3 June 2021) The Hong Kong Institution of Engineers (HKIE) will organise “The HKIE Innovation Expo” under the theme of “Engineering into Future” on 12 and 13 June 2021. The Expo is one of the highlights of the Institution’s Presidential Theme for this session “Believing is Seeing – Innovation for Transformation”. Key events of the Expo include exhibitions of innovative engineering solutions and a series of seminars which will be held online via a virtual platform. The general public and innovation enthusiasts may gain insights into the latest achievements on the way forward to the future in innovation and technology (I&T) development. The HKIE hopes that the public will also develop an understanding of the contributions that engineering innovations have made to the betterment of society. Through the Expo, new ideas will be sparked and exchanged among the industry and the public, hoping to flourish an innovation culture in Hong Kong, and pave its way to become a city of innovation

Ir Prof P L Yuen, President of the HKIE, said, “Nowadays ‘innovation’ has become something of a cliché. But the fact is that the number of innovators in Hong Kong lags far behind that of the surrounding region. This reflects the general public believes that innovation is a bumpy road and the return on investment is generally not warranted. Indeed, the Government and a variety of supporting services for entrepreneurs has been offering assistance to those who aspire to embark on an innovation journey. Engineers possess the professional knowledge and problem-solving skills essential for I&T activities which can help to promote industry transformation and social development. We believe through experience and successful case sharing, engineering professionals’ aspiration and confidence can be effectively enhanced, livening up the local atmosphere of innovation.”

Ir Prof Yuen added, “Inspiring the young has long been part of the HKIE’s mission, candidly because today’s youth is tomorrow’s future.” This Session, the Institution arranged a series of innovation-themed activities for students appropriate to their ages. Engaging also young members of the Institution, young engineers of the HKIE Presidents’ Protégés Club mentored about 70 Senior 3 to 5 students from 15 participating schools through 3 workshops on design thinking, 3D printing and programming to provide them with a foundation of engineering knowledge to compete in a prototype design competition under the theme of “smart health”. Winning entries will be exhibited and prizes will be presented to winners at the Expo.

Ir Prof Adam Choy, Chairman of the Organising Committee for The HKIE Innovation Expo, said, “The pursuit of I&T development will not succeed behind closed doors. We hope to provide a cross-regional platform through this online Expo, enabling exchanges between innovators in Hong Kong and the Greater Bay Area (GBA), to create a ‘talent pool’ of innovators. In the future, the demand for I&T talents remains unabated. To arouse students’ interest in engineering, the HKIE organises various activities for students of different ages, providing opportunities for them to experience the importance of innovation and engineering towards sustainable development.”

To establish long-term I&T cooperation with GBA counterparts, Memorandum of Understanding will be signed with 12 incubator centres in the region (please refer to Appendix 1 for details) at the Expo to promote knowledge and experience exchange, deepen the understanding of the GBA I&T opportunities and capabilities among local innovators. Exhibitions of these incubator centres will also be on display, showcasing the leading innovation achievements in the GBA.

Details of “The HKIE Innovation Expo”:

Keynote Webinars (please refer to Appendix 2 for details)

The HKIE has arranged webinars on technology-, construction-, electrical and mechanical-related solutions as well as specialised engineering solutions and engineering-related innovative experience sharing. Experts from different I&T institutions and organisations are invited to share their innovative products or solutions and valuable experiences in research and development phase. Keynote Speakers will discuss the innovative technology of nano-bubble technology, tunnel boring technology and bio-concrete.

Exhibitions (please refer to Appendix 3 for details)

The Exhibition comprises three major parts – I&T industry sharing (local and GBA), awarded works of The HKIE Innovation Award, and winning entries of school competitions.

Government departments, engineering and innovation enterprises, incubation centres from the Mainland and Divisions of the HKIE will exhibit ideas and innovative projects of great significance to social development.

Since 2008, “The HKIE Innovation Award” has become an annual and signature event of the HKIE that encourages members to realise their innovative ideas. Some of the outstanding award-winning works will be exhibited, and many of them have evolved from preliminary ideas to applicable solutions in engineering projects and in daily life.

With a view to inspiring the next generation of I&T talents, the HKIE has held the “Engineers of Our Next Generation” video competition for primary students to enhance their awareness of the important engineering projects around them and the new technologies adopted in these projects. For secondary students, the HKIE Presidents’ Protégés Club organised “‘Smart Health’ Workshops and Prototype Design Competition” to facilitate students’ involvement in public health issues, and offer them firsthand experience in solving real life problems with engineering knowledge. The winning works of the two competitions will be exhibited in the Expo.

Finale of The HKIE Enginpreneurs Award

In addition to primary and secondary school competitions, the HKIE organises “The HKIE Enginpreneurs Award” this year, which takes the idea of “Engineer” and “Entrepreneur”. It aims to encourage engineering talents who aspire to participate in I&T activities to start their journey.

The Award was divided into two groups, “The HKIE Enginpreneurs Award” for HKIE members and “The HKIE Enginpreneurs Award – Young Innovators” for tertiary students. Shortlisted teams from the members group will compete by giving a 1-minute elevator pitch in the finale, which will be broadcast live online.
