(23 June 2020, Hong Kong) The Hong Kong Institution of Engineers (HKIE) is pleased to announce the awardees of the HKIE Innovation Award 2020 which aims to encourage creativity and innovation in engineering among HKIE members, and to recognise innovative ideas and applications that would benefit the engineering industry and the world we live in.
The Award succeeds and evolves from the former The HKIE Innovation Awards for Young Members. This year, the Institution expanded the scale of the Award, and transformed it into “The HKIE Innovation Award” and “The HKIE Innovation Award (Young Member Group)” with the former open to members of all ages, and the latter for members of age 35 or below. There are two categories for each group, namely Category I – An Invention; and Category II – An Innovative Application of Engineering Theories.
The HKIE Innovation Award 2020
Category I – An Invention
Awardees: Ir Michael K Y KWOK and Ir Dr Goman W M HO
Hybrid Outrigger System with Structural Fuse for Tall Buildings
Conventional outrigger systems are designed either with steel trusses or as concrete walls. Concrete is stiff but brittle in nature, and is therefore not good for seismic actions; steel is ductile, but less stiff than concrete and more costly.
The awardees invented an innovative hybrid outrigger system which combines the strength of steel and the stiffness of concrete, resulting in a hybrid form using concrete walls and steel bracings. The system also comes with a structural “fuse” that behaves as rigid under wind action; while in the case of severe earthquake, this “fuse” component will yield and dissipate energy to protect the building.
This innovative design was successfully applied to the design and construction of the two 350m-high towers in Raffles City Chongqing in the Mainland. Substantial cost savings were also achieved through a 10% reduction in the total amount of steel consumption and an acceleration of the construction schedule by four months.
This design was developed by Ir Michael K Y Kwok, a member of Arup Group Board who has been East Asia Region Chair since 2017, and Ir Dr Goman W M Ho, an Arup Fellow and Director of Innovation.

15-cells Caterpillar Cofferdam for Large Scale Excavation Works in Difficult Geology: The TM-CLKL Project
This cofferdam is the world’s first 15-cell cofferdam of 500m in length and 43m in depth in difficult geology. As the conventional straight D-wall system has a high risk in terms of constructability, programming and budget; thus, the concept of 15-cell “caterpillar” is formulated. It consists of 15 truncated circular cells. Each cell is formed by a perimeter D-wall in arch shape, which resists the lateral pressure by hoop forces, and is then transferred to the heavy duty “Y-Panels” transversely supported by RC struts and cross walls.
This caterpillar system has benefits of requiring much less rebars, unobstructed construction space and less ground treatment. It fully utilises the compressive capacity of concrete in contrast to the conventional straight D-wall system, in which resistance is provided by vertical reinforcements and congested steel struts. From an environmental point of view, this innovative cofferdam eliminated over 21,000t of steel and 80,000m3 of ground treatment, and reduced the material carbon footprint, plant consumption and pollution of ground water. The design could save HK$0.5 to 1 billion, and 6 to 10 months for construction. The caterpillar is highly transposable and has the potential of becoming a new standard cut and cover technique.
The design was proposed by Ir Chan Wing Yin, Senior Engineer/Special Duties, Highways Department, HKSAR Government; Ir Ng Chung Wai, Vice President, Major Project Delivery, AECOM Asia Company Limited; Ir Dominic T K Law, Project Manager, Dragages-Bouygues Joint Venture; and Ir Chan Ho Yu, Associate Director, Atkins China Limited.

Train Hardware Maintenance Cloud with Realtime Condition Monitoring Invention
Hong Kong’s railway business is world-renowned. It is featured in hubs distributed across the globe and runs the Operations and Maintenance (O&M) of railway lines. Maintaining technological edge in O&M is crucial to staying ahead of the competition and achieving the highest level of safety for passengers.
Armed with both hard and soft skills, the team invented two new items: (i) a device that connects to trains to collect train-electronic component data for condition monitoring, and (ii) a large cloud platform that analyses the data in real time while digitalising all maintenance inspection forms and tasks on a user-friendly mobile phone interface. The backend of the cloud automates work-scheduling and helps engineers in three ways: prioritising action items, grouping tasks, and making decisions vetted in real time by the board of workers, supervisors and managers.
This is a genuinely designed-in-Hong Kong invention. Having been implemented for more than a year, it has helped improve staff efficiency immensely and eliminate much tedious clerical work.
This design was independently developed by Miss Lau Ming Wai and Ir John S J Leung who are currently working at the Rolling Stock Maintenance Department, and Mr Raphael C F Wong who is working at the Technical and Engineering Services Department of the MTRCL.
