(5 March 2020, Hong Kong) The Hong Kong Institution of Engineers (HKIE) is pleased to announce the awardees of two engineering awards to recognise their contribution to the Institution and the engineering profession. Ir Wan Chi Tin received the “HKIE Honorary Fellow 2020” and Ir Tim M T Wong was awarded the “Young Engineer of the Year Award 2020”.
The HKIE Honorary Fellow 2020
Honorary Fellow may be elected each year to recognise remarkable services to the Institution, to engineering in general, or to the fields of sciences. This year, Ir C T Wan received the honour.
Ir Wan is the Managing Director of The Hongkong Electric Co., Ltd. (HK Electric) and the Chief Executive Officer of its holding company, HK Electric Investments. He is also an Executive Director of Power Assets Holdings Ltd.
Ir Wan obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering from The University of Hong Kong in 1973. He is a Chartered Engineer, a Fellow of The Hong Kong Institution of Engineers, an Honorary Fellow of the Energy Institute, and a Fellow of The Institution of Engineering and Technology.
Ir Wan has been a professional engineer and a business executive in the power industry for more than 40 years, both in Hong Kong and overseas. He joined HK Electric in 1978 as a junior engineer and has gradually moved up the career ladder. Shortly after joining HK Electric, he was deployed to work on overseas projects apart from taking part in local ones. Ir Wan served as Chief Executive Officer of Powercor Australia Ltd and CitiPower Pty., two electricity distribution businesses in Australia from 2000 to 2003, and is the trailblazer of HK Electric’s overseas business. Currently, he is a director of a number of energy businesses in the UK, Mainland China, Australia and New Zealand which are co-owned by Power Assets with other companies of the Cheung Kong Group. From a consulting engineer to an investment and owner representative, Ir Wan has left behind a global footprint that spans from the Middle East to Japan and Australia, and from the UK to South America.
Locally, Ir Wan has been instrumental in providing Hong Kong with a safe, efficient and highly reliable electricity supply through his many project management, corporate development and leadership roles. The interconnection circuits across the Victoria Harbour linking Kowloon Peninsula with Hong Kong Island in the early 1980s is one of his signature projects. Ir Wan was also involved in different projects in developing the electricity network in HK Electric’s supply areas and in refining the regulatory regime in the past decades. In recent years, Ir Wan has been at the helm in steering HK Electric’s coal-to-gas transition to reduce the company’s carbon emission.
Since his harbinger tour to the Middle East in the 1970s, Ir Wan has committed to the belief that Hong Kong engineers working overseas are there to share our technical knowledge and ethical values. This is a belief he is still holding fast onto and one well appreciated by others with acclaim, bringing him and his corporate successes in the international arena over the years.
Ir Wan served The Hong Kong Institution of Engineers as a Council Member from 2012 to 2016. He was a member of the Engineers Registration Board from 2010 to 2018. From 2016 to 2018, he was the Vice Chairman of the Engineers Registration Board.
As for community services, Ir Wan is currently a member of the Audit Committee of The University of Hong Kong, a position he has been holding since 2016. He was also a member of the HKSAR Government’s Steering Committee on the Promotion of Electric Vehicles from 2013 to 2019, apart from serving on a number of appeal and disciplinary boards as well as advisory panels under the Electrical and Mechanical Services Department and Environmental Protection Department over the years.
Young Engineer of the Year Award 2020
The Young Engineer of the Year Award aims to recognise outstanding young engineers who have made significant contributions and outstanding achievements to the profession, to the community of Hong Kong and to the HKIE. After a deliberate reviewing process and panel interview, Ir Tim M T Wong was selected for the Young Engineer of the Year Award 2020.
Ir Tim Wong, the awardee for the year, received his Bachelor of Engineering in Civil Engineering from McMaster University, Canada in 2008, and Master of Science in Construction Project Management from The University of Hong Kong in 2012.
In 2008, Ir Wong began his career as a Civil Engineering Graduate at Arup. Since then, he has been continuously developing his expertise and knowledge in managing large-scale complex infrastructure projects, including the Hong Kong West Drainage Tunnel, Admiralty Integrated Station, Kwun Tong Line Extension and Tin Wing Stop Development.
His extensive experience in Hong Kong has led him to participate in key infrastructure projects in the Greater Bay Area and Southeast Asia, to which his recognised contributions have assisted in elevating the status of Hong Kong engineers. He has resolved technical and interfacing issues for railway projects as a design integrator for Shenzhen Metro Line 4, interface specialist for Seac Pai Van Light Rail Transit in Macau and the “Build Build Build” programme of Asian Development Bank in the Philippines. He is also driving the digital transformation for the Department of Transportation of the Philippines.
Ir Wong is committed to contributing to the HKIE and nurturing the next generation of engineers. His commitment began early during his time as a university student when he established the first overseas HKIE Student Chapter in Canada. He was one of the ten members under The HKIE President’s Protégé Scheme 2010/2011 and co-founded the President’s Protégés Club. In 2012, he was the first runner-up of the HKIE Trainee of the Year Award and a Co-opted Committee Member of Civil Division in 2014. Since 2016, he has served as the Honorary Secretary to Hong Kong Institution of Highways and Transportation. He also volunteers as a mentor and an Engineering Supervisor supporting the HKIE Scheme “A” Graduate Training.
As the leader of the community engagement taskforce jointly set up by Arup and St James Settlement, he helps to equip young children with STEM concepts and knowledge as well as raising their awareness of community concerns. He is also a committee member of the Lifewire Foundation, a crowdfunding platform that supports patients and medical experts in Hong Kong.
This year, Certificate of Merit of the Young Engineer of the Year Award 2020 went to Ir Alex T H Fu.
