(Hong Kong, 8 October 2021) The Hong Kong Institution of Engineers (HKIE) is deeply concerned about the fatal accident arising from the collapse of a scaffolding that happened today at Beverly Hill estate on Broadwood Road in Happy Valley. The HKIE offers our deepest condolences to the worker’s family.

The HKIE urges the Authorities to undertake an immediate investigation to identify the cause of the accident, ascertain the liability of relevant parties, and make suggestions for improvements. With the advent of more frequent extreme weather events, the Government should look into the suitability of existing regulations on scaffolding safety and approval processing, in order to prevent similar accidents from happening again.

All parties of the engineering and construction industry should also continue to uphold their respective responsibilities of maintaining a safe workplace.
